Mear and Gray have recently set up, making guitars in the 'old' Martin style. Nick Mear is the builder, and has done a pretty good job on his first instrument. You can hear Stuart Ryan having a go here and here. I'd like to see them make a success of this, not just because Adam Gray is a good friend of mine! It would be interesting to get your feedback. Would that be the same Adam Gray that had several Youtube videos of Martin Simpson covers?

I like this performance too, which I think really shows what this guitar is capable of:
Do you have any more information about them Peter? Their website doesn't give much information about their backgrounds.
Reading the specs the only thing that would worry me (a little) is no truss rod, eek!!!

Looks very interesting. And refreshing to see a website which isn't as coy as some about pricing.
Would be good to have an indication of where they are actually located though.

Robbie They don't say no truss rod, they say no adjustable truss rod. This wouldn't bother me at all on the basis that I have a Martin 00028k authentic and a 45 year old Fylde with a solid truss rod and have had no problems with either. Great sound.

Yeh, I think thats what I meant, I'm not sure I would trust a truss rod you can't adjust! But then as you say, you've had two guitars without with no problems. My Huss and Dalton had the straightest neck I've ever played, went into all sorts of tunings, and never once had to adjust it. Which is just as well, because H&D basically hide the adjustment nut so that most owners would never tinker with it! Robbie

Gray is on the business end, but Adam has been around high-end guitars for a long time, and I think is guiding the vision. My understanding is that they are trying to be 'authentic' in design and build, so that may explain the truss rod decision. I will pass on feedback, comments and questions to them. Peter

Hi Robbie,
I think if it's built correctly in the first place, which these obviously are, there should be no need to adjust a truss rod. I think people just like something to adjust, often causing more problems than they solve, which is why so many manufacturers make the truss rod adjustment difficult to access.

Martin only started using adjustable truss rods in 1985 so these are true to the “old” Martin design. Prior to that they had non-adjustable rods in the neck.

I am also intrigued. The guitar that Stuart played does sound very good. Adam is coming to my annual guitar bash this month (20th) and will be bringing an example with him, so I will get to see/hear the real deal then.
Cheers,
Ian
