Then I came across this monstrosity in The Guitarist's Way book 2. I can't get my head round it. This is like next level stuff. After trying to play it several times I'm frustrated, my fingers are sore and I feel like throwing the guitar out of the window! Might have to skip this one...

... it's mostly open strings Larry... just take it slow at first and you'll be fine.

As Keith says, take it one bar at a time. What is it in bar # 1 that you are struggling with?

Larry, your post made me look at it. You may have already noticed it, but there's a lot of repetition in there: Bars 1 and 2 - same Bars 5 and 6 - same - bar 7 just about the same Bars 9 and 10 - same - bar 11 just about the same as the previous two Bars 13 and 14 same.
So learn 4 bars and that's almost three quarters of it sorted. Perhaps it raises a question about practicing in general: is it best to go with what your fingers are saying or push through and spend some time on it?
I did hear something once from someone who ran a 'folk orchestra' (I think). An interesting and quicker way to learn something is to start at the end of the piece and work backwards towards the beginning. I haven't tried it but the idea sticks in my mind.
You've probably already got there but I found it interesting looking at it.

It doesn't look so bad - here's someone playing it on YouTube!

An interesting and quicker way to learn something is to start at the end of the piece and work backwards towards the beginning. I haven't tried it but the idea sticks in my mind. I do this on occasions. I've discovered that when learning a solo or a piece from bar 1 onwards (once I've learned the whole thing) my playing of the beginning is way better than the end. It makes sense - one will have played the beginning many more times in order to get to each subsequent bar / section. Starting at the end, evens things out.
That said, it's still feels better to start at the beginning and work forwards as you get more of a sense of what the composer / performer was shooting for.

It doesn't look so bad - here's someone playing it on YouTube! That was alright actually. It didn't sound like that when I tried it. But I don't think I was playing the Bb notes in bar 3😬

The point of this little study is to observe the rests. That's the most difficult thing about it.
We only have two hands and therefore any problems will be a bit where synchronization between right and left fail. Isolate that bit and just do it ridiculously slowly. When you get it right, use exactly the same fingers the next time.
Keith is right. It is mostly open strings with a Bb and and A thrown in on the 3rd string.

I got it! Was much easier this time. Still a work in progress, very rough, but I got the piece down, and including the repeats it runs to over 2 minutes. My longest piece yet! (Though for some reason the beginning of the recording was cut off)
