Wow, what a collection. I've always fancied a Thumb bass after borrowing one for a gig years ago. Have you seen the new Fender Dimension bass? Very music man like,
Robbie

Is there a favourite in there, grayn? Which one gets rescued first in the event of a fire? A fine looking collection!

Very music man like, Robbie Yes, Warwicks do have a feel and sound, all their own. It's nice to see Fender branch out from endless P and J basses but I have to say, I think the Dimension looks very much a poor man's MM. But as I haven't played one yet, I can't base that on anything but looks and spec.

Is there a favourite in there, grayn? Which one gets rescued first in the event of a fire? Good question Leo. If I was being practical, It'd be the Gryphon. It's the most versatile and best suits the band I'm in now. But I'd probably save the Warwick. It's got a unique tone, with a lovely, mid-low growl. And it's deep neck profile is incredibly comfortable to play. It's funny, because I used to really dislike Warwicks. A few years back, everybody seemed to have one and I thought they were ugly. Infact, before my wife had seen the Thumb, I described it to her as looking like a polished log, with a neck attached. Yet she liked it, when she saw it. And once I'd really got into playing it, I started to love it's looks.

Basstastic Graham! Lovely looking collection there.
Ever explored the (largely unsatisfactory) world of acoustic basses?

Infact, before my wife had seen the Thumb, I described it to her as looking like a polished log, with a neck attached. 'Polished Log' - ha ha. Beautiful collection of bass guitars. The Gordon Smith one looks like it'd be a Swiss Army penknife of basses. Grayn, have you seen any of the other new Fender basses? The Starcaster looks amazing. Of the 'new' Fender basses, the Jaguar is supposed to be great. I really miss my old Fender Jazz Bass...

Thanks Wiggy.
The Starcaster looks a real cool, retro bass. I went through a short "retro bass" phase, quite recently. They are cool but don't suit my style of playing, in general. Fender really have started producing some very cool retro and modern basses, over the last few years. The Modern Player Jaguar is excellent, for not a lot of cash. There's also a Japanese made Jaguar, that I'd like to try, sometime. If I was going to buy a Fender, it would most likely be a Jazz Bass. Great tone and very playable necks. I've owned a couple, in the past. I owned a Fender "Victor Bailey" Jazz, a few years ago. One of the best Fenders I have played. But it didn't come close to the Englsh, Overwater JB, that replaced it.
I came very close to getting a Fender Jazz, a couple of weeks ago. It was a Japanese model, with a Jazz bridge pickup and a precision middle pickup. It had block fret markers and a bound neck. Very good bass and at a good price too.

Ever explored the (largely unsatisfactory) world of acoustic basses? Keith I had a Crafter electro, that I played in a Celidh band. John Hullah made me one, yonks ago, that was a beautiful instrument but was pretty useless acoustically and electrically. As I've said before, I once had a mando-bass. It held it's own acoustically but was prone to feedback, amped up. So now I pretty much stick to solid basses.

Those are very nice Graham. I think my favourite (looking) is the Musicman Sterling. You'd have been in your element last year at the forum meeting - I took my Fendar Jag bass and amp along, and annoyed just about everyone with it. You could have done some real damage

... think Glyn might be bringing that Vintage acoustic bass again this time - last used in the Plucky Dip two years ago! It came over surprisingly well on the vid as I recall, though it does seem hard to hear when you're playing it.

The new 'retro' Fender basses are short scale, which as much as I like the sound of, I find full length basses to produce the sound which suits my playing the most. I had a Japanese Fender J Bass myself. They aren't always the best basses, but pretty versatile. The finest 'Fender' I ever played was a Squier JV P Bass. Once again, all this bass talk is making really miss playing bass. I miss my old band days of playing psychedelic 15 minute jams...

Definitely agree that short scale basses play very nicely but have a sound of their own. Like you, I prefer a full length scaled bass. Fenders, like a lot of makes can produce very different quality intruments, even within the same model. Nowadays they come from US, Japan, China, Indonesia etc So, as always, it's try before you buy. The Precision is probably the simplest (in a good way) bass guitar out there. So it's not so hard to make a good'un. Squier have proved that. Come on Wiggy, get your paisley shirt out of moth balls and buy yourself another low end beauty.
