Just for info's sake , and so as I don't have to think too hard , I'll recommend a book by Dorian Lynskey, called 33 Revolutions per Minute: A History of Protest Songs, published by Faber, in 2010.
Plenty of lists , definitions and controversies to boot in that.
Best regs Peter

For those who may be too young or not heard it before here is Barry Maguire a former New Christy Minstrel singing Eve of Destruction. It was on the radio on the hour every hour for months on end. I have also found a vid of him in 2010 singing it with guitar and telling the story of how he recorded it so a near 50 year gap. Not a hair on his head now

I always think of Drive-by Truckers when I see this thread, a lot of their songs are quite political, though probably in the social comment sense rather that overtly protest songs. However, on the out-takes and album The Fine Print, one of the stand-out tracks is a cover of Tom T Hall's anti war song 'Mamma Bake a Pie', which I think does fit into that category.

My best songs are protest songs, I think , with climatic change and the Middle East featuring prominently. Of course, people tend to view ' old ' protest songs as entertainment but wriggle in their chairs a bit when you confront them with something current. The role of ' folk-singer ' as ' politician ' isn't an easy one- although humour is a very useful presentation medium . Four that I currently play solo are; Acid Rain- self explanatory Maralinga Man - which concerns the British nuclear tests in Australia Big Wind- self explanatory and Palestine Blues- a condemnation of neo-Zionism which I recorded with two of my old friends in Australia last year;
That's just a first-take rough with a little second guitar overdubbed. The finished version is heaps better. So contemporary protest can leave you on dangerous ground. I don't doubt for a moment that the insecurity services have my number- but that's just an encouragement to stand up more often and to sing louder.
I saw this bloke performing this song at the Spalding club earlier this year. Powerful, dangerous stuff. We all have to watch each other's backs, in the current climate. We protest at our peril. Perhaps it's always been like that ?
Good thread, 007.

Loved Palestinian Blues, colan, would love to hear the 'tidied up' version ... This song, "The Song Of The Olive Tree" by Leon Rosselson, I find evocative and moving. I've heard it sung in duet with him and Reem Kelani (a Manchester-born Palestinian) in which she plays the oud to Rosselson's guitar. Breathtaking. This is the only audible version I can find of the song:

That's a lovely protest song, Leo, and the lass makes a fine job of it . She'll be a ' person of interest ' to MI6 as well, no doubt. Got any protest songs of your own ? There surely must be dozens about the 96 ?
I tried to get an ' oud ' sound out of the guitar by playing the bass strings up around the 12th/13th fret. They've got that sort of feel at their mid-way point.

Got any protest songs of your own ? There surely must be dozens about the 96 ? There's one or two in The Plucky Duck - but they're more social commentary than protest... and I've never done a song about the 96 ... too raw ... although I did write one when Anne Williams died - A Mother's Love
