Not wrong at all. The 6-string banjo has an honourable history and used properly it sounds great in jug band music. I say buy one when you can, but don't go below Gold Tone's quality.

Not quite a guitar, not quite a banjo, eh? Equally despised by both camps, no doubt I heard a German due a few years ago where one player used a 6-stringer banjer and it sounded excellent in the context. You do, however, have a very nice Gold Tone 5-stringer which I'm sure you could put to very good use. Let me know if I can assist - I might even try this Skype thing again (only used it once for a good old moan to Keith ).

i think you're better off sticking with musical instruments, Leo. LOL! I don't know, grayn... I have the uncanny ability to make most musical instruments sound like they've been put together wrong

I know, I know.... And Dave has started building 'Molly' and the build is, as usual, being documented on his website.. The eagle-eyed will also spot that heirs concurrently building a Bealtine for Marcella Rick (who was an entrant for the forum contest a while back which jwdaubney won.. So that'll be at least 2 young musicians with Defaoite instruments

What's age ...
Still in Devon, Leo? Right now I'm having a pipe and a glas of Talisker while thinking of the great time I had down there in September.
Enjoy your stay !

How can anyone say this isn't a banjo? The bridge is on a drum skin. The tenor & plectrum banjos have 4 strings. The 5-string is one variant that became more popular than others late in the 19th century. There is a 6-string that has a short thumb string. The 6-full-length-stringer appeared on some early Jazz recordings and has never gone away. My friend Geoff Beaumaont has two 7-strings. There is a 12-string. Some 'jos are fretless. They're all banjos, none is wrong.
Blue guitars and coated strings are wrong.
I'll get my coat.

Blue guitars and coated strings are wrong. I'll get my coat. Aha! So coated strings are wrong, but coated jugbandmen are OK. Seems a bit stringist to me! You are, of course, completely right about blue guitars. Does that make me colour prejudiced?
