Hey, Guitar Friends-- I live in the States, and I have been very, very lucky in my life to own a bunch of American luthier-built guitars. I have guitars by Tom Doerr, John Mayes, Gerald Sheppard, Lance Kragenbrink, and Dana Bourgeois, among others. I have played a Sobell at a guitar camp once, a fine instrument but a bit of a beast to tame. Perhaps Sobells are a bit of an acquired taste. I could see the excellent craftsmanship, but I would say the sound was quite unique, compared to American guitars. I played. A Brook once, too, which was a lovely guitar, and at one time I was enchanted by the Lowden sound, which is distinctly not American, in a very good way, of course. The last two guitars I have purchased have been a Bourgeois small jumbo in Madagascar/adi and just a few days ago for X-mas I got myself a Martin OM-28 Vintage. Both these instruments I would describe as distinctly American traditional guitars, a dry, penetrating, fundamental sound, which I guess after all these years I really, really like. The Bourgeois and the Martin are just incredible guitars. I have been playing both of them a lot recently, and I couldn't tell you which one is "better ." The Bourgeois is a little crisper and louder, the Martin is a little deeper and more penetrating. Hope you all have a safe and happy holidays.

Hi, jwills57 ... sounds like some very nice instruments you have there! What sort of music do you play primarily? There is certainly a lot of love for Brooks and Lowdens on here, along with other British makers like Fylde and some smaller concerns such as Gary Nava, Taran (Rory Dowling) and DeFaoite (Dave White) - the last three all being members of this 'ere forum
