This is my favourite tuning and iI too think in this tuning. I like the way that you can easily play a melody whilst moving the bass line up or down (diatonically) and still play chord partials / drone strings as you do so.

Yep but I do find that other tunings bring with them their own distinctive voice. Certainly when I'm writing a song or a tune these often see to fall more naturally into one tuning than another. If anyone is interested, there is a rough video of a an instrumental piece in CGCGCD on my Facebook page. Sorry, but I don't have a YouTube account at the moment (history of lousy wifi where I live, now much improved so YT will no doubt happen some time). Link is in my signature.

It's been pointed out to me that the links in this old thread of mine for John Doyle's "The Cocks Are Crowing" no longer work so here are some new ones that hopefully do: IntroMelodyRecording of my version

Dave, I found this really interesting. It's not a tuning that I use, although I do use C and Cm. Given that the tuning is placed somewhere between major and minor it's surprising that it's not used more extensively in the blues, given that it's supposed to be "a minor music played in a major key." The only player I know in that genre who uses it extensively is the wonderful Ray Bonneville. When I get the chance I'll try to dig out some examples of his playing. SW. It works very well for some blues, of the bouncier kind, — try these two of mine:
For me it doesn't work as a straight clawhammer – I tune the 3rd string from G to F for that, but I like using it in this way.

Releasing the tension in your G string slightly will certainly bring an element of relief and maybe let your clawhammer morph into a gentler finger style...

Holy thread revival! I’m starting to learn a tune in CGCGCD and really enjoying the sound. Does anyone have any tabs for more tunes I can attempt in this tuning? Will motivate me more to retune if I have more than one tune . The internet seems a little sparse

Both Martin Simpson and Tony McManus have tunes arranged in this particular tuning. Martin's website tabs begin here. If you'd like free tabs of tunes, an internet search should prove fruitful, you can search for the tunes that are listed with this tuning on Mr Simpson's website. I'd also try the same tuning with the D string tuned back up to pitch (so called Orkney tuning). Good luck. Dale

There's a good book and CD by Steve Baughman that used to be for sale. He starts with bluegrass tunes. I think he teaches a lot of what was in the book on Peghead Nation. Here's an Amazon link to the book I've got. There are little exercises that need practice to get your fingers around it. I liked it. Bughman BookThere are other books on there as well Here'a the Peghead Nation link. The site is very good, and you get 2 months for the price of one when you start so it's worth a punt. The internet seems a little sparse Hi I don't play a lot in this tuning but you could try one if mine that I can sort out the tab for you if you are interested? It's a slow piece and I don't think it's very difficult. This is it..... Another one of my videos is Loren by Gordon Giltrap which is nice and I know a couple using a partial capo in this tuning. Let me know if you're interested 😊 Phil

Thanks Phil, it’s actually your tune that I’m trying to learn! I found the tab in one of the Brook magazines and remembered it from your CD.
