I borrowed a Fender Strat and amplifier some years ago. Quite fun, indeed a blast, but I don't think the family were impressed. So unless I was to join a loud band I could not really see the point. I was in a folk band for a while but we were fully acoustic. I once attended what was described as an "Acoustic Night" locally, only to find that absolutely everyone plugged-in*. Only acoustic and squeezebox for me.
*including instruments that could only be played plugged-in---solid bass, keyboards....

But can you tell if an acoustic guitarist started on electric? I didn't, never really have and unlikely that I ever will.

Started acoustic, went acoustic and electric and semi acoustic, back to acoustic when I left home at 19, stayed there ever since. I would still like an electric ... I'd LOVE a 335.

I have two electrics to one acoustic right now and I've been pondering this question for most of the day. Although I do love my Tele I find that I'd much rather sit and noodle with an acoustic doing a bit of fingerpicking.

Not a Tele in my case but that 2:1 ratio (4:2 to be exact, but same proportion) is just the same as is my preference for playing acoustic. If this continues for several months I'll have a very difficult task to try to justify still having 4 electrics. Though hopefully that 4:2 will be at least 4:3 by then!

The ratio will definitely be changing at some point soon. I'm likely to buy either a dred or 12 string because my Recording King is not an ideal strummer. The problem I have is the age old one of not enough space and a wife that doesn't entirely understand the need for more guitars.

Explain to her that it's more expensive to change a wife than get a new guitar

Explain to her that it's more expensive to change a wife than get a new guitar I have made similar suggestions. She seems to think that I would miss that part of my anatomy though...

With no gigs in the pipeline for some time my brother in law asked me up for a jam with him and his daughter who plays a bit of bass . He has currently 5 electrics and owns my American strat , and an Epi Les Paul and SG . He's just bought a Burns Cobra too so anyways he's given me my SG back and I'd kinda forgotten how much fun it is . Its pure rocknroll and easy to play as I'd done the set up myself . I got some new strings from stringbusters three sets of dadarrio for 9.80 and some heavy picks . And bingo . Now I'm still an acoustic man but rock music is in my bones and I suppose always will be .

Interesting... also, is it possible to spot a steel-string player who started out on classical?

I have three Gibson acoustics and a Les Paul Custom which lives in its case for months at a time.

I am acoustic guitarist - 15(ish) years of riding a drum kit with Marshall stacks either side of me with consequential hearing damage was enough screaming electric guitar for me.
A pretty young lady promised me certain "delights" if I took her to the Cambridge folk Fest to see a guy called Tom Rush who captivated men, women (and me) with just a voice and an Epiphone Texan convinced me that the was another way to play music and entertain by caressing eardrums rather than assaulting them.
I can no longer go to electriuc gigs and when in doubt - I take earplugs.
