I think you're right vikingblues on the £400/£500 mark, it seems you get a hell of a lot of wood for that price these days, it's almost like the half a century price buys what most guitarists want without going into huge debt...if you're careful and shop around you'll get a whole lot of quality guitar for the price.
Ref the Crafter Oaklnad 55 FE/N, it really is a fine looker, the sound is okay, nothing fantastic but does the job, it's only when you have other guitars you can instantly know it's not in the same league as other....this normally reflects in the rrp price. I'm told this guitar used to retail around £400 and that was some years ago so difficult to know if the price was warranted....For me it's maybe worth a little less today, the guitar is nearly 10 years old and everything has changed, quality of low to medium end has got so much better due to competition. In its day it would have been a bargain but I think today manufacturing has got better for less bucks.
The fact that Crafter has told me there are only 21 sold in the UK suggests it's a good buy as far as resell. Will I keep it? I don't really know, it's a new toy at the moment, I love the feel, the colour, it fits nicely for me but the sound does let it down a little...but then I have to say for the price it was a steal. I do tend to have a relationship with my guitars, some stay forever and I will never ever let them go...others I tend to say '..I've enjoyed you but now you need to go...' type thing. Ruthless or what lol
It's difficult not to compare guitars unfairly when you own different price ranges because you always have favourites, I have a low end Yamaha and the sound and feel just does it for me, I have a Tak that is 4 times the price and I like them as much as each other....The Crafter is nice and it's rare as rocking horse sh*t but it really isn't in the same league in sound and feel...but it's a looker and still plays well.
I think this is why I just love all guitars, they are all unique in their own way and especially with older guitars they all have stories to tell that we will never know...for me it just makes them all the more interesting.
