Now, when I was a kid everyone brought home a recorder. Summer was the time the dreaded brown and cream plastic squeal horn came out. It was dreadful. They were dreadful. The devil's flute. But... The recorder is a genuine orchestral instrument. It has been around since medieval times, and when played right is a thing of beauty. So far my kids havent brought one home and I'm saddened by that as it was part of my childhood, and now that I'm older I can appreciate this much maligned instrument. In short I want one, but preferably made of wood, in the medieval mold. And rather than squealing it will sing!

Well, they do have their good points. Not too loud, light weight and portable. I'm sure the wooden ones are still available but dread to think how much they cost these days.
I think it was last year that a recorder player was in 'Young Musician of the Year' so it must be possible to make a nice sound, somehow.

Richard Harvey used the recorder to good effect with the group Gryphon who blended traditional English folk, Baroque instrumentation and Renaissance music in a modern format. He has gone on to be a major composer with many film & tv soundtracks. Here's part of his recorder concerto.
Far cry from what I recall hearing from the school "orchestra".

I used to be a Gryphon in my university days but have not heard them for many, many years. In my youth I even played one of their tracks during my attempt at being a DJ on university radio, and this is the track I chose: I am now going off to wallow in nostalgic recollections about all-night parties, drunken concerts, very long hair and the pain that scrumpy can inflict. My daughter is conservatorium trained (she started learning when she was about 5) and plays baroque music on recorder in a variety of ensembles. The combination of recorder and harpsichord is magic, and the addition of violin, viola da gamba and soprano even better. Bach, Telemann, Corelli and Purcell and heaps of lesser known composers pumped out some marvellous stuff that works well for recorder. There's also some strange late twentieth century recorder music for those who like that sort of thing, a field dominated by Japanese composers.
But wooden recorders of reasonable quality are expensive, and very good hand made ones are very expensive. Acoustic guitarists would see a pattern here. In addition, serious performers need recorders in the range of sizes, and often have to have duplicates in baroque tuning in addition to 'modern' pitch.
The better plastic recorders (Yamaha springs to mind) are effective tools for finding out about the instrument and the music, and it only takes a few months to get through the squeaky bat noises stage, in my observation. The violin was much much worse, believe me.
And anyway, I think Jimi played recorder on one of his album releases, and look how his career took off.

I have abiding memories of them from school. Made by Aulos. Always a dark brown and cream. Can still get em but schools no longer give them out free!

Brian Glad to hit the nostalgia button Brian. I'll admit to having 4 of their albums in my CD collection. "Gryphon" (including the Kemps Jig you linked), "Midnight Mushrumps", "Red Queen to Gryphon Three", and "Raindance"! Think I get attacks of nostalgia too. I felt most connected with "Midnight Mushrumps", a very fine album, with a great title track (by Richard Harvey) that starts it. There's some very good acoustic guitar playing amidst all the Crumhorns. Link to that album below in case anyone's interested in a listen:- Sorry - a bit off the thread topic - apologies, but you know what it's like wallowing in nostalgia. Gryphone should have been much better known! Mark

OUCH!!! But it does have a "Rounded and polished beak" so it's not a surprise! (Sounds like an attribute of that famous Norwegian Blue). "I wish to make a complaint about this recorder what I purchased from not half an hour ago from this very boutique". "Oh, the Mollenhauer Denner Edition Alto recorder? - beautiful rounded and polished beak". Mark
