Hopefully not too late, here is my entry, a short solo instrumental for guitar. The piece has an AABA structure fairly typical of jazz ballads. The melodies in the A section came to me fairly readily but I've been noodling with different possibilities for the B section for weeks; still not quite sure this will be the final version but time is running out for competition entries. If I had more time I'd like to add a few bars to open with too, and a stronger final ending than I managed here. For this recording I have just played the piece through twice, once as a slow air, and once with a bit more pace. The piece is in standard tuning though certain parts use open string and harp-effect ideas more commonly associated with DADGAD and other open tunings. If anyone wants to try playing it themselves I've attached the tab to this post Herringthorpe Beck.pdf (63.2 KB)
Herringthorpe Beck is a stream in Rotherham near where some relatives used to live. When it snowed in winter we would bumboard on baking trays down the hill and fall straight into the stream. ("Bumboarding On Baking Trays" was another possible title of this piece, but perhaps less likely to win). In spring we'd hunt for tadpoles in the stream, and also sooner or later fall in. Any time of year, the trip was not complete without getting wet, hence I have strong memories of sitting in Auntie Jennifer's living room in my y-fronts, waiting for the trousers and socks to dry on the radiator. Happy days!

Colin's guitar is coming on beautifully, and must be nearing completion now! I really didn't expect to be able to participate in this competition, through lack of time, lack of skill/talent and zero inspiration, but over the last week or so I made an effort, and this weekend, something popped out! I certainly don't expect to come close to winning against the incredible standard of the other entrants, but I'm happy at least to join in the fun This is a wee song played in standard tuning (detuned one step), and it's about the Barnacle goose, the old legends, amazing early life and equally amazing annual journeys they make from the Arctic north down to the West Highlands and Solway Firth among other places. There are lyrics too, but I'm not in the practice of writing songs, so apologies and for the finger flubs! app.box.com/s/spd0rxp7j5876s40b2m3Rise, from the icy deep Through the dark marine Weed, you might have been
Fir, tossed along the sea Clad in shells and scree Fall, or now fly free
Soaring high and graceful now
Leap, from the clifftop high Too young to wonder why No feathers for to fly
Brave, the harsh and sore descent Dazed, not broke nor bent Safe now, no lament
Soaring high and graceful now
Grey Wing takes flight
Darker days, now are here Skies are cold and clear, From Arctic, South you veer
Far above the seas that roar Travelling far again, once more To settle on these shores
Grey Wing takes flight etcapp.box.com/s/spd0rxp7j5876s40b2m3

Here's mine,
https%3A//soundcloud.com/earwighoney/la-fille-aux-cheveux-ecarlate
It's an instrumental played in the tuning of CAbDGBbEb and there are 3 sections.
It's inspired by a painting by Degas that used to be in the National Gallery called 'La Coiffure'.

Hello Folks, Firstly apologies for the not greatest for quality. My pc literally went on fire so I had to record this with my Iphone. Originally I was writing a piece in Dadgad and worked on that for a month or two and had about 80% of it done. Then one night I decided to try a tune the guitar to a chord i played in standard tuning which happened to be me the cowboy chord of C#min 11th with no fifth (tuning from low to high C# F# B E B D#). I thoroughly loved this tuning which led me to try and write a piece in it. Which was about a month ago and getting a tattoo and accidentally breaking all my nails kind of made it difficult to get the time to play The song itself wasn't based on anything just an adventure of sound but now every time I play this song I feel it's about an adventure of leaving home and experiencing the big bad world. One image does stick in my head is Bilbo Baggins leaving the shire for a big adventure. Time to get some tea and finally listen to the other entrants. Chris.

In order to make it fair and keep it fresh I've not listened to the entries until yesterday. I must say that I thought the standard of composition was very good indeed and I enjoyed them all - well done everyone. Colin's guitar is a fabulous prize and the spirit of the whole competition a wonderful thing - it's been a joy watching both develop and here's a big thanks and hats off to Colin I've passed my views/choices on to Colin so you're all in the hands of Obi Wan Symonds now.

Well I spent a very happy evening last night listening to all of the entrants a number of times, can I thank everyone who entered the competition, the standard of entries was very high, making it a difficult choice for Dave and I to decide on a winner. I could happily have seen the guitar go to a large number of the players. Dave and I produced our lists, which tallied well, and we have both agreed on a winner. It came down to a toss up between two pieces, but the deciding factor was the fact that one tune just stuck in my mind and really evoked the image behind the piece.
So, step forward to receive your prize 'MIKE FLOORSTAND', Joe you are now the owner of a new guitar.
To all of the other entries I'd like to say thanks, I'm sorry there could be only one winner, but there will probably be another chance next year.
Oh and I hope I haven't ruined too many peoples' Christmas.
