I've done a few bits and pieces of soldering but for the new Squier Tele I bought recently to have it's entire electrics replaced I took it a shop. There are some bits which are really annoying and fiddly like cutting and stripping wire to the right lengths for the fat fingered idiot that I am. Do you already have an electric guitar Martin? If you are looking for soldering projects, there are some amazing pedal/amp kits around. For starters... www.musikding.de/guitar-effect-kits-amp-kits

Soldering can be a right bastard. Wire and solder it all up and it doesn't work due to one bad connection and it's a bit of a hassle to find which needs done again. I used to usually do my own electronics when I assembled / built electrics, but I never managed to reach the point of enjoying or even feeling relaxed about the soldering. Does save a fair whack of money though.
