It's strings again After having been away from Elixirs for a couple of years I just discovered their (relatively) new HD lights, which are very close (.013, .017, .025, .032, .042, .053) to my DADGAD sets from d'Addario and Pyramid. I just have ordered two sets to try and find out if this might be something for me. In case I find the 6th string too thin, there is always the possibility to replace it with a single nanoweb PhB .056 which is, I think, of the same series. I'm looking forward to trying something new again

The search for the perfect set is surely almost as endless as the search for the perfect instrument on which to fit them, Akquarius

Good stuff, Bernd.
I'll be interested to hear how you get on with these.
I've thought of trying them also but I have a cousin going off to the states and I've asked him to pick me up ten or so of the usual med gauge Elixir pbs. I may have enough strings for a few years!
Good luck.
Alasdair.

Sad but true, chaps.
I hate conforming to stereotypes but they're not half good value for money...
It's a stroke of luck that they're my favourite-sounding strings also.
Four guitars - pack of strings per year - three/four years depending on present stock.
Sorted.

I love em Bernd . I put them on the Freshman about three weeks before Halifax and they're still as good as new and I've been playing almost every day in the last three weeks . I couldn't recommend them highly enough .

HD's? They're the ones designed with Taylor aren't they?

Just out of curiosity... if you buy a set of elixirs and hold on to them for a year of so before using them, is there any chance of degradation in that time or does the coating prevent this? I have used them for a few years but the last set I put on sounds a little dull to me (they have been sitting in my desk drawer for quite some time though). Cheers, berf

Yo Marcus!
Can't say that's ever been my experience with Elixirs. I tend to have several sets lying around for quite a while and I've never noticed any deterioration.
Hope all well in Oz!
Alasdair.

Yo Yo Alig-oh
Three o'clock and all's well in Oz... except that our esteemed Capt. Clarky has pulled his troublesome hammie and looks to be out for the summer.
Sounds like I may have got a dodgy set... or else my ears are just getting old and tired.
Back to the HD lights... it sounds like an interesting gauge set particularly if they were designed for Taylors. Now my experience with taylors has not been extensive but the ones I've played sounded quite trebly and bright to my ears. What would be the reasoning behind increasing the gauge of the mid and treble strings? I would perhaps have done the opposite and looked at higher gauge bass strings. But what would I know?
I'll be interested to hear how you get along Bernd.
Cheers
marcus

Coolio Marcus,
Been watching the highlights of the cricket. Must be nice for you boys to have a bit of competition - at home at least... Less said about Pakistan the better, eh...? Clarke - always suspected you lot were a bit fragile... What happened to a bit of ticker?
Taylors - had a few in my time, and a couple of higher end models. What you say about them is true in my experience. They are quite treble-oriented so quite why they've introduced strings which, on the face of it, will lessen the bass side of things escapes me. Haven't tried any of the newer 're-voiced' models so maybe there's something in it with those models.
i see you're 2-1 up on the Saffies - nicely poised. Looked like quite a wicket in Perth!
All the best and good luck with the rest of the series.
Really.
Alasdair.

I have a new Taylor 712 and it indeed came with Elixir HD lights - to my ears they add a mellow roundness that is not usually part of the Taylor sound. In fact to be brutally honest I normally don't like the Taylor sound at all and don't bother even playing the Taylors on the wall of the Guitar Center, and I'm not fond of Elixirs either. But on this occasion after I'd been through all the Gibsons, Martins, Breedloves etc, someone recommended I try the little Taylor, and I literally couldn't stop playing it. To my ears it sounded better than everything else in there (with the possible exception of a Martin authentic) and played a good deal easier than the Martin (not to mention it was half the price). Which is why I went home without it and then went back the next day and bought it. I've since tried one other set of strings on the Taylor, but immediately replaced the HD's - the strings are definitely part of the sound. I haven't tried the HD's on any other guitar yet though, so I'd be interested in hearing what you think of them. My only concert is the 13's - I normally play 12's or 11's - the Taylor is shorter scale so for me they aren't noticeably harder to fret but personally I might have a problem on a full scale guitar.
