Don't know if any of you guys have heard of Foy Vance but he's worth checking out, we see him recently at shepherds bush where he was joined for most of the second set with his friend Ed Sheeran, it was a great gig but, and this is the reason for this post, at the beginning of this song Foy is using an effects pedal, you can't see what it is but does anyone have an idea what it is from the sound only, thanks for any help...hope this link works !

It's a volume pedal.

I think it's more than that clydeside, there is a synth sound coming from it as well.

Don't think so. Volume down, play notes, volume up, sounds like a violin.
Same thing a certain Mr. Knopfler does on this track with his volume knobs.

I must be hearing things, I'm sure there's a synth sound in there

See what others say, I'm sure it's just a volume pedal though.

I've listened a couple of times on my crappy office speakers, and can't hear a whole lot to be honest. I can believe it's something like a volume pedal, it certainly looks like one (from his foot action). He also says this in an interview with Acoustic... A longtime advocate of George Lowden, Foy makes it quite clear how he achieves his great acoustic sound on Joy Of Nothing.Sorry to be of so little help

I'd go with volume pedal too.
Once you remove the initial attack from the notes of any instrument (which is what he's doing, then swelling the note in and negating what would be a lot of it's fade away), it's amazing how similar they all sound, especially with combinations of notes.
Keith.

Not a clue what the pedal is, but really enjoyed the video. Another one to check out on the tube. Cheers Steve.

Martin, that quote you found from Foy is about right, all you need is a Lowden guitar and a Mic.... like it

Had a drink with him in a Belfast pub back in 2005 when visiting the Avalon workshops. Nice guy. Needs a bigger following.

Could there be someone else playing a synth out of shot? He does seem to be doing something weird with his hand at the beginning and at first I thought he was using an ebow, but I don't think he is.
I once learned a Foy Vance song for a friend who thought It would suit my voice. I haven't heard anything else by him though.
