I have an old girlfriend to thank for the file I use.
She was a silversmith and used fine metal-working files. She saw me using one on my nails and asked if I'd like it as she had plenty.
It's the best I've used.
For what it's worth...

You should have got it from a pound shop. How much do they cost from there? I always ask, just to make sure.

Aaaaargh! Commiserations Andy. Can you bodge it back together at all?
I stupidly bust my middle fingernail tip right off a week ago, though not as badly as that - mine is still approx same length as finger, but is probably the one I use most, so picking feels very odd, and doesn't sound too great either.

My wife, who regards me as fundamentally scruffy and a lost cause to male grooming, reckons that I spend more time with a nail file than her. As I flail about with DIY, gardening and other physical chores, scratches and bruises don't bother me but I get really upset if I break a nail. Odd what guitars can do to you...

I've got a variety of different gloves of all sorts for gardening and all kinds of work. Looks funny, but helps a lot.

I'm having real problems with the nail on my index finger. Thanks all for the tips. I think I'll try some of those glucosamine pills

I had heard the consumption of raw jelly cubes helps strengthen nails or the application of almond oil or Pale Green Grape-seed oil. A quick Google appears to add weight to this.
Also Essential Oils such as the following: Cedarwood Chamomile Frankincense Geranium Helichrysum Jasmine Lavender Myrrh Neroli Palmarosa Patchouli Rose Sandalwood Ylang Ylang
Rubbing stuff on your nails, or eating jelly? ..... hmmm..... choices, choices.
