I'm working on In the Long Run for our band and thought I'd try out my new recording rig by doing a tutorial video on how I play it. It's a deceptively simple song and is great for practising an arpeggio picking style and using hammer ons to good effect.

Great, clear video, Cams Thanks Martin. It's the first time I've tried anything like this. If people like it, I may do more. It's a great way of making sure you know something properly!

It's a really useful tutorial Cams, so we've popped it into the 'Playing and Techniques' section for member reference, as it seems more suitable

Cams, your setup works beautifully! You asked for comments etc, well, there's not a lot wrong with your excellent version, but it does deviate a fair bit from the Stave's live version I've heard, esp in the picking pattern. I wouldn't criticise your way of playing it, which sounds fine, but if you do want to get closer to what is played by Staves then that thumb needs to get into a more regular alternating bass for much of the time, and there are some treble refinements you might consider too - I reckon Ms Guitar Stave uses a regular alternating bass thumb (6th and 4th strings) on the G and C shapes riff (and a lot during the song), and hammers on the 1st finger/2nd string (plucked open then hammered) and the second finger/4th string which is not plucked when first hammered on as the thumb is playing 6th string, but then the thumb alternates to and plucks the already hammered on 4th string. Not sure I'm explaining that v well, but it's very Paul Simon! I really like the PO HO things you do to get back from the D to the G at the end of the verse - more interesting than the Staves recording I've heard - a change to the original but an improvemnt IMHO In various places in the verse and often towrds the end she sounds to me to use a D 7 (xx0212) rather than a straight D, plus or minus the extra 4th finger as on the D. Esp on "but I know" The bridge is Em-A 7-D 7, and not Am as you mention in the vid whilst playing A5 x022xx (neither maj nor min). I can clearly hear a second string second fret note at the top of the A chord she uses, and maybe x0202x is what I'm hearing. The "F" chord you worked out and wanted to name is called Fmaj7, and is, as you rightly point out, an F with an E in it! Again, I'd thumb alternately the 6th and 4th strings of a 103210 Fmaj7 shape (left thumbover as you do on the vid), but I think she sounds to be just using xx3210 with the thumb playing double time on the 4th string. Then, the first time this Fmaj7 goes to a C shape, she uses a Cmaj7 (x3200x) and then adds the first finger to make a normal C (all happens during the word "home"). The second time it does go directly to C as you say. Hope these things might get you closer to the sound and feel original, if indeed that's what you want to do. Keith

That's just the sort of feedback I'm looking for Keith. Thank you. It'll make much more sense to me when I get a guitar in my hands again, so I'll see what I can work out from your great feedback and whether to try and incorporate it into what I'm doing or not.
I appreciate your comments greatly.

..cheers Cams - very gracious response. Have a thrash on your guitar and if it's not clear then PM me and I'll try harder! I've just now had a look at Youtube myself to make sure I wasn't talking through the wrong orifice. Yup, the alt thumb thing is a must - there's a couple of live vids on Youtube that show this pretty clearly that I'm sure you'll find them helpful, though I'll not clutter up your thread by posting them here - they're easy to find. In one of the vids, in the intro, she does the complete Paul Simon thing and slides the 3x2013 C shape up to the D-ish thing PS does - 5x4035 - think that actually detracts from the song though - prefer her simpler home-grown version! Those girls can certainly sing - gorgeous harmonies - are you fortunate enough to be able to have 3-part vocal harmonies in your band Cams? Keith

Yep, I've found the video you mention ocarolan and the alternating thumb is clear. It's interesting that she's playing the third fret of the bass string in the G and the C and keeping her finger there. I knew this song was deceptively simple! It's going to take a fair bit of practice to get the alternating thumb going, but it's just the kind of challenge I'm looking for right now. It is a three-piece band: I play with a husband and wife in this particular line-up. Nicola's got the lead vocal in this and I won't be attempting any harmony until I can nail the picking! Jessica Stave makes it look so simple, the mark of a true pro. We also play our own version of Mexico, with me on lead vocal. It's far easier to pick! Yes! This makes much more sense with a guitar in my hand and you're right. Your response to this is a good lesson on how important it is to listen. I got there with the Fmaj7 (thanks for the name!) by listening and I could clearly hear the open first string, but I couldn't quite catch the alternating thumb. Now I know how it sounds, I should be better placed to recognise it in future investigations! The YouTube video helps a lot as well. It's such a useful tool! I'll consider remaking my video when I get the thumb thing down. Without wishing to copy them religiously, it does seem an important part of the song and hammering on the second and fourth strings rather than just the second makes it sound oh so delightful! Would you have any objection to my posting your corrections in the description of my video pending its remake?

By all means feel free to make use of whatever you wish however you like, Cams, you're welcome.
Your band sounds interesting - have you done any recordings together?

Thank you Keith. We don't have recordings with the 3-piece, but the same three people are in the five-piece Arran Ceilidh Band with two others (see how good my arithmetic is?!) and we're just about to finish our first CD. I'll post something up when the mixing is finished. Thanks for asking!

I heard them on Lauren Laverne's show and it was fantastic. I actually have 6 on most of the time at work. Love that station!
The picking style of In the Long Run reminds me of Jackson C. Frank and it has inspired me to turn of 6 and put on the Blues Run the Game. First time I heard that track was on Acoustic Routes, the documentary about Bert Jansch. I bought my first guitar the first weekend after I caught that documentary. So from Jackson to Bert and the Staves. There's a certain thread to the style of acoustic music that moves me so much!
