Martin.. Yes, I’m still on the lookout and thanks for the heads up on the J29 at GAK, it’s certainly a keen price. I went to Andertons on Sunday after Ian's guitar-do which was superb. The Andertons visit was however a bit disappointing. Their Acoustic Showroom is quite small and packed not only with guitars but other punters trying them out at the same time, so not exactly a rewarding experience. Got some strange looks whilst sound-hole sniffing and nearly cleared the showroom when I got my nose stuck between the 3rd and 4th strings but that was as exciting as it got. I tried a couple of J45s and several other Gibsons but I don’t remember a J29, however none of them took me fancy and I left rather uninspired. Could have been the mild hangover or the cacophony in the showroom but I left with my money still in my pocket. Jan on the other hand wandered into Guildford and found more things to tempt her than I did. The search goes on.

In my experience it's necessary to try a lot of Gibsons (whether new or used) before you find one that a) is set up properly, and b) sounds half decent from the off. A number of guitar shop people have told me that they're the most inconsistent of the major American manufacturers, and I can believe it. Trying before buying, and factoring in the cost of a good set up, is pretty much essential in my view. Like I said...

Sniffing soundholes!
Andertons are great for PAs and stuff.
