Right, so using 0000 steel wool for the whole fingerboard is ok? Wish I hadn't oiled it last night now.... Thanks for the info, gives me something to try out later  |

Despite having the utmost respect for Mr Ford, I've done it lengthways - as that seems to me to have more chance of rubbing away actual dirt, rather than bits of fingerboard either side of individual frets. You'll need to mask off the pickups though, as you do tend to end up with tiny bits of wire wool all over the place! |

I've used frogtape (http://www.frogtape.co.uk/ ) to cover the fingerboard when dressing the frets. Comes off really easy with no mess.
