Right I've had a fiddle and can report that I was talking b******s as usual. As you suspected Keith, I can get pretty much the same quality via the mixer as without. The trouble is of course that this quality is not what I would hope for. There's no doubt that the L R Baggs Element Active VTC in the Breedlove direct into the amp performs considerably better than the K&K in the Lowden via the Orchid. Would you ever consider just micing the guitar for live performances? This ACUS is a 60watt amp and I can get plenty of volume and decent enough tone without the pre-amp, certainly enough for the venues that we do so I've decided to sell the Orchid. Orchid [John Gosland] can make you a battery phantom power supply unit...in the custom products section.. www.orchid-electronics.co.uk/custom_products.htm

So he does! Thanks very much for that link Andrew. The question is do I recoup some of my outlay or do I spend again.......? As I see it the only material advantage to using the Orchid is for its handy EQ and mute button. The Acus amp has an excellent EQ. There's also the possibility of loss of sound quality in connecting the pre-amp and the amp with an XLR/6mm jack cable. Conclusion: sell. Thanks guys. And Keith, I'm very sorry for the

Doh. Keith

If you do decide to sell the Orchid, please PM me! I love my Orchid and the tone I get from K&K using it. Changing guitars thriugh it is easy with minimal (usually volume) adjustment, but another one would save me having to make radical eq changes for mandolin/octave mandolin. I have occasionally used a small diameter condenser mic for guitar and voice together in very quiet places where they'll deffo listen. Sitting down it works well as the guitar and gob are closer together than when standing - mic halfway vertically between gob and guitar, about two feet or so away and into AER placed a few feet to the side and slightly in front. Allows a fairly natural sound and some movement unlike close miking, which I've never tried. Not easy to tweak the amp mid-performance though unless a mixer or something used as well. Keith

There is a lot I like about the look of the Orchid but I would miss the battery power option.

Will be playing a dramatically less good good version of this one and several others of a Scottish persuasion for an audience singalong tonight at a Burns Supper in a neighbouring village. Not sure what connection Mr Burns had with Somerset, but I'll be playing guitar/mandolin along with Glyn Nuffsed (bass), and chums Kathy (fiddle) and Brenda (keyboard) who conned us into it with promises of free food and whisky. Trouble is, I'm driving. Keith Beautiful rendition. Praise from a Scot. Always brings a tear to my eye.

Keith I sold the Orchid to ocarolan and have replaced with it the mini Headway EDM-1. It has the jack output rather than the XLR output of the Orchid so I can put it straight into my Acus, leaving the two XLR inputs on the amp for mics. Having tested it this morning, to my ears it sounds as good as the Orchid. I like its petiteness and it has the handy mute button too. I got it on eBay for a very competitive £118.50 (there are still four available at this price). (Note to Admin: you may want to move this to another section!)

Andy P Nah, it's fine here - it follows on from the previous posts nicely Andy. Glad you're enjoying the Headway. Have enjoyed using your Orchid, which has a better clamp than my older one, and the XLR socket seems somehow firmer and more positive in use. Keith
