Good to hear you went for the Oil City Pickups and you are pleased with Ash's guidance.
A5's in the Bridge makes a lot of sense. I have a HB sized P90 in my Tele bridge with A5's and I really like the sound of it.
If the idea of soldering seems too daunting, a small trip to the local tech might be a good plan!

Well, I already got me a wee soldering kit, mat and some rosin core 63/37 solder, so I'm good to go And guess what turned up today, only three days from placing my order? I think the weekend might be the best time for a task of this magnitude, but we'll see

Here are the pickups, unboxed. Need to order more strings too (can't keep the current set on while soldering, can I? )

Nice! Has the bridge pup got a baseplate? Can't see from the angle.
A tip for soldering to the back of pots, give the spot where you want to solder a quick sand with a fine abrasive, makes the solder stick a lot easier.

I don't think it has a brass baseplate, as many others (e.g. Fender CS) seem to have. Will this make any difference? I assume the fella that made them knows his stuff... Thanks for the soldering tip - I have never, ever soldered anything in my life, so it should be fun I have watched many Youtube vids about it, so obviously my confidence is high (I now call it 'soddering') I have almost finished clearing out my 'den', so I aim to begin the pickup replacement this weekend. I'll try fixing my old amp first - that should prevent me from totally screwing up the guitar soldering.

Thanks for the soldering tip - I have never, ever soldered anything in my life, so it should be fun I used to spend far too much time on a certain Telecaster forum and I'm afraid such arcane questions became part of normal language. I won't ask if you're using an oil and paper cap... I haven't got a clue if a baseplate makes any difference! I would also be prepared to leave it to the bloke who designed them, he should know. My first soldering experience was a Tele, easy enough but the sanding tip does save a lot of frustration and probably a fried pot or two. Good luck!

I did watcha video where a very clever chappie said to heat the item you want to attach a cable to, then touch the solder to the cable and it should flow in the direction of the heat. My worry here was that he was heating up the back of a control pot for quite a while, so your 'fried pot' comment now has me thinking....not a pretty sight!

I checked the bottom of the pickup tonight. While it doesn't have a metal baseplate, there are two strips of metal glued to the underside of the pickup, so that might be to serve the same purpose. I hope to get working on it on Saturday, and will of course document the procedure for posterity

Good luck with the soldering! I do recall soldering was right up there with trying to get the neck cavity / join right as the most stressful parts of a guitar building project. But I'm more a DDIY person than DIY. Number 11 on the linked pictures would be typical of me. DDIY picturesMark

That sounds great rob! Wonderful jazz picking If my guitar was routed for it, I'd definitely have considered a humbucker there.
