I missed this thread altogether Very interesting thread - never really thought much about cases but the Pegasus certainly looks the 'Rolls Royce' particularly with the cool custom tartan Phil

Yes, a very interesting thread indeed! It seems that the manufacturing process for top-quality fibreglass cases is very labour-intensive and probably very boring for the poor sod who has to lay up the fibreglass by hand. We were very early customers of Keith Calton back in the 70s and 80s and I still have a Calton case about 30 years old which has been round the world more times than I can calculate. Used it last night! It still works brilliantly except for one catch which could do with re-aligning. Phenomenal! Way back then, Keith Calton couldn't keep up with demand (and let us down a couple of times on deadlines) which is why, I assume, he licensed the manufacture out to Canada. Now the ball is back in Keith's court and reading between the lines on his website, he is aware that someone else will have to come on board if he is to satisfy demand. So it is good to know that Pegasus are making such great cases and (by accident or design) keeping it small and manageable. In the meantime it is possible to get Chinese-made fibreglass cases at affordable prices but the are not as bomb-proof as Caltons or Pegasus. Basically, unless you are flying your guitar all the time, a Hiscox will be the best option. Lots of pros fly their instruments in Hiscox because of the weight issue. I'd say that in 95% of baggage incidents, a Hiscox will protect your instrument as well as a Pegasus or Calton. If you fly a lot, or entrust your instruments to gorilla road crews who practice throwing instruments onto the top of piles of gear in an artic, you need a heavy-duty fibreglass case! Oh and of course, the aesthetics of one of these gorgeous cases is an important consideration sometimes.
