Unless it's a bolt-on, I'm assuming you aren't really going to try a neck reset Martin....I mean I know it was only a tenner, but.... 4mm at fret 12 low E - so, (NB) assuming the relief is OK (if not, fix that first then remeasure action) you'd need to lower the saddle by 3mm to lower the action to 2.5mm, 4mm to lower it to 2mm. Is there enough saddle above the wood to do this? Keith

Dont throw the strings away Leo leoroberts will get lots more use out of them But that would entail Leo turning the tuning thingies, pulling out the bridge pins, removing his existing strings along with their years of built up crud...nah, never going to happen.

Thanks for the tips which I will obviously absorb thoroughly, but I did buy this guitar with the express intention of trying a neck reset. If I can. For a tenner, it's worth the (massive) risk. I've watched some YT vids and it looks really easy, so no worries. There;s only about 2mm left on the saddle anyway, so no joy there. The truss rod will be adjusted beforehand so that I get an accurate idea of how far I need to wrench and staple the neck by. Might even take the top off to have a butcher's inside...

I'm impressed Martin - all the best with this - looking forward to a blow by blow account of this. And you're right - it should be fun, and there's (almost) nothing to lose! I hope you've taken advice from rodders on this one. Keith

You could try to economise by revitalising the strings giving them a good boiling, but do take care with the hot water and don't forget to let the strings cool before you refit them. Ged.

Strings are off, frets polished and board oiled. I tightened the truss rod first and the string height is now 3mm. Still gonna lever the neck off though...

Would grilling or poaching it work as well?

I spent a large amount of my teenage years buying leccy guitars in similar condition to that starter example, stripping, cleaning and setting them up and making a decent bit of pocket money. Got through an awful lot of WD40 and very cheap aftershave from the market mind you...

Because I know I am By the way, thanks for the tip about the aftershave. Making the guitar smell great will get me more wonga Which brands did you prefer?
