I fully concur with your WOOHOO! A lovely looking instrument. (I wouldn't know what to do with it and look forward to hearing what you do with it.) And the sangfroid of the man - "Unfortunately the top suffered damage in the process of glueing on the back that meant a new top had to be made" - deserves a mention in despatches.

Congratulations, Paul and well done keeping this quiet! I'd have been bursting to spill the beans. Apols if I've not followed your interest in this, but what prompted you to commission a cuatro? Can't wait to hear you play it

It is, indeed a lovely piece of work. It's a Venezuelan cuatro. Why a cuatro? Because I'm a dilettante, and I haven't got one. And I like Steve Knightley, and his songs don't sound right on a uke. Why Dave White? If you need an answer to that, you haven't been on this forum for long. So, what does it sound like? It has a sort of fast attack crunch. The tone alters a lot depending on your right hand technique. Last night I was trying everything I could think of from some SK songs to a fingerpicked Scarborough Fair. It really is incredibly versatile. Another triumph of a build from Mr White. I would add, that Dave was incredibly helpful and understood exactly what I was looking for. I'm sure most of my communications with him over the build were gibberish, but he divined what I wanted, and he built it! It's perfect. And very pretty. Thank you, Dave. You've done a bloomin' incredible job. I'm having a great deal of fun with it. I'm not sure I'll ever play it at gigs. I'll have to get a damn sight better at it before I do. I haven't done any recordings with it yet, but if I get a chance over Christmas, I may put something on Soundcloud.

So that's a Cuatro - hadn't heard of that instrument before but I'm sure as it's a Dave White instrument congratulations are in order! It would be interesting to hear it at some point - and further my acoustic education. Mark

Here is a recording of the new cuatro.
It is very rough, but unprocessed. Played acoustically. I chose a Show of Hands song for the accompaniment, but the words are from a Broadside of 1814 published by Wood of Liverpool.
Recorded on a Zoom H2n. Topped and tailed in Audacity.
The flubs are all mine. The instrument is impeccable.

Yes indeed - it does all sound very good indeed! A combination of Dave's building skills and your playing and vocal skills Paul. Regarding the recording - in your words "rough and unprocessed" and in my words "a great natural sound". Mark
