and I know what action I'll then need to take Mark sounds sinister Mark Funny old world isn't it. I was about to post this:- As I bring my aching fingers into contact with the strings and listen as the winds of desolation blow and scatter the sound that fails to stir my soul I yearn for release from this torment.
If the problem remains unsolved I will have to cast the miscreant instrument into the wilderness. For it surely cannot be that the fault is my lack of skills.
Failing the wilderness, and it's a long way to go to take it there, I'll just try and sell it!
If so it will be be yet one more in a line of spruce topped instruments that I've been unable to bond with. I guess it was a bit of a gamble given my lack of spruce-based success, but it was very much the best option of all the guitars I tried. Then I took the guitar out of it's case to check it. Could it be THAT bad???! IT SOUNDS FINE! Atmospheric conditions on Sunday and Tuesday maybe? Something wrong with my ears? Or wrong with my mood? Crisis averted. Day 1 of two weeks off work - maybe my mood is brightening. Mark

I had a vision of you trying to cut the headstock off with a blunt saw... Glad to hear you were just contemplating a banishment!
I definitely think, like us, guitars have good days and some bad days.

Now I'm totally confused. Normal tension 13s on the short 23.75" scale Jumbo Junior hurt my left hand finger joints. Normal tension 13s on the longer 25.25" scale Vintage V2000MGG feels OK for the left hand. That is also with the action a bit too high on the Vintage. It felt so good that I didn't even consider they could be 13s until I got around to checking what strings are normally fitted in the factory. Also with this guitar I think I'm getting something of that fuller and richer tone with 13s that Andy mentioned in the second post on this thread. I've never had that before with 13s. I should know by now that you can't rely on any preconceived notions about what specification makes a guitar good for you. Mark

Hi. I'm late to the party - but I do have an opinion (FWIW).
My playing style takes much from bluegrass and so my weapons of choice are 12 fret dreadnoughts.
My thinking goes along with most guitar makers.
Dreadnoughts, jumbos, archtops, and resonators - 13-56 - I use D'addario EJ17s (I confess that I swap out the b and top e for lights ... anyone want a load of 13s and 17s?) 000,00, L-00 etc - lights - 12-53 EJ16s.
Simples.
