Must have been one of those things I needed to process subconsciously Dave, as I completely get it now, i like the step makes it more substantial.... do builders ever shape the fingerboard extension, just wondering as the Cyprus grain is so distinctive and perfectly swoops around the soundhole, a swooped extension might work with it (or not!), just my idle thoughts... it's half term and I'm at home with the kids

Rob - yes some makers do shape the end of the fretboard in different ways. I match the curve to the soundhole and the figure on the top should match the fingerboard wedge and converge with the fingerboard edges at the body join. We'll see Today was a neck day. The next job is to route the truss rod slot and the slots for the two carbon fibre rods: The truss rod is then glued in with a Cuban Mahogany cap together with the carbon fibre rods using fish glue:

Thanks Lars. Bracing time. The Lawson’s Cypress braces were prepared to just over 6mm wide. The top X braces were then profiled to a 13’ radius, the notch cut in each brace and the braces glued in the gobar deck using hot hide glue: Next the A frame braces that are inlet into the neck block are glued on using hot hide glue: The upper transverse brace is notched to go over the A frame braces and is glued on: The back is cut close to the final shape, the bracing positions marked and the X braces are then glued in with hot hide glue after notching and profiling the bottom surface to a 10’ radius: Then the ladder braces are glued on in the go-bar deck using hot hide glue:

After being distracted with "processing" a chest of drawers and making a humungous set of bookcases for my daughter it's back to "quantum" side of woodworking The Cuban Mahogany bridge patch is glued on to the top in the go-bar deck using hot hide glue and a caul: The back of the rim-set was profiled both for the back curvature and for the reduction in height from the tail-block to neck-block. Then the back mahogany reverse-kerfed linings are glued in using fish glue:

Dave, forgive me if you've already covered this query earlier, but are you going to stick K&K minis in this one before the box is closed? It would be great to try it out in plugged in situations when it goes on it's travels. But I would understand if you felt that might expose the instrument to more risk etc... Keith

Keith,
I hadn't thought about a K&K. There's plenty of room through the soundhole so one could be fitted before the Road Trip starts if there is enough interest. I'm quite relaxed about people taking it out to play in gigs/sessions on the Road Trip.

Here’s the completed rim set: The back is cut to shape and the Madagascan Rosewood cap over the X braces glued on using hot hide glue: The braces are carved and the back “voiced”: The back linings are notched to accept the brace ends and the back is glued on using fish glue:

Thanks Francis The Cuban Mahogany centre strips are then glued in using hot hide glue: The top is cut close to final shape and the Lawson’s Cypress cap over the X brace is then glued on using hot hide glue: Then the brace behind the bridge-plate is glued on: Then the tone bars: Then the finger braces: The top is “voiced” and when I am happy I signed and dated it: The notches for the brace ends are cut in the top linings and the top glued on using fish glue:
