Congrats on that colan - the best presents are always the self-bought ones. Enjoy! Keith

Looks lovely, colan and it sounds wonderful in that clip. Merry C*******s Yes Martin - I hope mine sounds as good. Of course..................I'd have preferred a red one. This will be my first encounter with a compound fretboard- 9.5 to 14.

What Les Stansell says about this wood: "It is the ultimate "structural grade" wood and has the highest strength to weight ratio of all wood species. It is among the toughest and most elastic of softwoods and due to its fibrous interlocking grain structure it is extremely resistant to splitting and is very dimensionally stable. When compared to traditional neck woods, PO Cedar rivals both the lightness of Spanish Cedar and the stiffness of Honduras Mahogany… and with its very small, almost microscopic pores it finishes out like glass (with no pre-filling) to a look of aged ivory. Can you tell that I am crazy about Port Orford Cedar?" www.lmii.com/products/mostly-wood/neck-woods/port-orford-cedar-neck-blanksMy confidence is rising.

I've been playing it for two days straight. Daft as it sounds it has precisely the tone I've been trying to get from my Gibson ES 335. I don't know if it's a characteristic of maple necks and fretboards but I can feel the resonance through my fingers as I'm playing. It's an experience I had with a Samick Tele - now sold - and it's very pleasant, like a finger-tip massage. This is a keeper. I've already swapped the plastics though as I'm not a ' pearloid ' sort of person. Mint green now, to complement the sierra-burst. There's an eBay bloke who stocks multiple colours and he'll even do you a custom colour in the unlikely event that you're even more pernickety than I. I've lowered the factory action by about 50% and the frets and fret-ends are as smooth as a babe's bottie. The six-piece adjustable saddles are a joy after the Gibbo and all my effects units sound very different with the single-coils. Of course, I now believe that ES-335s and Fender Strats ought to be sold in pairs. " Real classic " ? I don't have any comparative experience- but if I was wealthy I'd buy the other one that's still in the store's warehouse.

You've got a pair yourself, doubtless.

Certainly have. About 25 years ago I sold my Japanese Squier Strat (maple neck / sunburst) to fund my dream purchase of a blond 335. Picked up a USA Highway One Strat recently. Both are great guitars in their own way. Nice to have one or the other but heaven if you own both.

Glad it's really worked out for you.
A good strat is a real wonder.
Funnily enough, after years of being a single-coil and P90 fan, I've really converted to the PAF Humbuckers, on my Tokai LP.
Guitars, they're a wonderful mystery.

I confess to also buying a Fender Elite HSS Strat - and a Chinese knock-off to take to bits. It's never too late in life to buy a Strat
