I use a thumb pick. They are great for some ragtime sounds but I really wish I hadn’t gone down this route!

Just the flesh for me. I’ve never really grown my fingernails because of playing sports where I’d be in danger of either injuring someone or getting a nail torn off. I’ve tried using a thumb pick, but without nails it makes the bass overpower everything else.
Also I think I’ve tended to buy guitars that respond well to a lighter touch and (to my ears at least) sound a bit harsher with a thumb pick.

I've tried a few times with a thumbpick, but I'm so used to just using my bare thumb that it just feels all wrong and I give up. I guess if I persevered I'd get used to it, but I'm basically happy without it. I've also found the bass notes sound too loud with a thumbpick, but again if I stuck with it I guess I'd adjust my style to play softer with my thumb.

Inspired by this thread, I had another go last night, using a Fred Kelly slick pick that I seem to have acquired... just feels wrong to me

I use a thumbpick for my open tuning & slide playing, & for strummers in standard, but for the more intricate picky stuff I usually take it off. I find it gets in the way & I prefer the rounder thud from playing the bass strings with the flat of my thumb.

I've always used a thumbpick, it's made by ProPik, and I trim the pick itself all the way down, so it's *really* short. I pair that up with a couple of metal ProPik Fingertone fingerpicks. I find it damn near impossible to play without them, and find I get more speed and articulation with that combination.

I often find (even with Fred Kelly speed picks) his that they are too long when new. SaveSave

Thumbpick for me with natural nails.I have just acquired a Fred Kelly pick -not the pointy one and it really is a game changer-before that used Dunlops but heavily filed down and shaped.
