Yesterday I played a really lovely guitar - it was a friend's Yamaha LL26, a superbly made dreadnought from Japan. A bit beyond my reach financially (they all are at the moment ) but among the nicest dreads I've tried. I've now seen another Yamaha Japanese made acoustic for sale, the smaller bodied LSX400. Apart from the horrendous butchery of locating the pre-amp controls and battery compartment in the side this looks really lovely. Does anyone have any experience of this model of Yamaha guitar?

Sorry for the confusion - the one pictured above isn't a dreadnought, rather the other one I tried yesterday (LL26) was

The LL26 is mad money! I played one in a shop once though. It was bloody nice. Even the Chinese made Yamaha models are nicely made now.

The ‘red label’ Yamaha instruments were very good and even their budget models very competitive. Remember both Bert Jansch and Ralph McTell had endorsement deals with Yamaha years back and they sounded decent instruments.

Yeah the LL26 is super expensive! This LSX400 is much more reasonable, but sadly has the invasive electronics Plus it's quite far away, so not as if it can be easily tested. I've heard the red label stuff is good, but this is more recent - around 2000 or so I believe, but Japanese made.

Even the base models are good. I used to have a folk guitar which I used for holidays and festivals. I had in setup properly and installed a pickup. My only problem was the neck was a bit narrow for me. I gave it to a nephew and have always wished I’d kept it.
