The fiddler in the band told me the other night that she paid £17 to buy one new string, which made my complaint about the price of guitar strings seem a bit petty. It sounds like quite a piece of luck that you already had a good fiddle in the family! My nephew is a first-class fiddler in Canada, it just occurred to me that I could have him look out for a decent but cheap fiddle over there and bring it back with me in July. Yes, my violin repairer couldn't hide her amusement when I told her I'd paid £13.50 for a full set of strings. She fitted a £30 set for me, which she said was a very good deal! She's a very interesting lady. She used to make curtains, then about seven years ago when I would guess in her early 50's, and with no previous experience of making instruments of any kind, she decided she wanted to make violins instead, so she enrolled on an intensive course in Notts (she lives in Fife) and commuted down there every week for six months. She's just finished her 30th violin and she's been selling them for around £5000. She's now aiming for the London market, having been told that she'll need to up her prices as no self-respecting violinist is going to pay a measly £5K! Yes, ask your cousin to sort one for you - perfect! And don't forget to get a decent bow

It seems like a good bow costs more than a violin That's funny about your repairer, I wonder how many other things in life are over-priced purely so they will be taken seriously!

Martin Grosswendt told me that he’s been learning to re-string violin bows (probably the wrong term, but you know what I mean) because there’s more money in that than in playing and teaching guitar. And he’s as good a player as you’re ever likely to hear. Go figure, as they say! martingrosswendt.com

I'm a little late to the debate, but I see a couple of other folk have mentioned OAIM I'm at the very beginner stages of mandolin, and have tried two good sources of online tutorials: OAIM and Mando Lessons, which is a free resource. I find the latter by far the better of the two: it's clear, moves along at a decent pace, is very understandable, and seems to take a logical approach to learning chords and melodies at the same time. The beginner series is particularly good. Beyond that, it doesn't follow the structure of a laid-out course, but instead is a resource which you can dip into at any point. OAIM is more structured, but I find it less inspiring. However, what you get for free is pretty impressive. Ian

Thanks for the link to Mando Lessons - looks very good. I need something to kick start some progress on the mando. Mark
