That’s reassuring as I’ve just ordered one of their electric mandolins. The brand seems to get good reviews so fingers crossed. Let us know what you think! I've had two Harley Bentons in the past, both Martin copies that looked to me to be made identically to the Sigma guitars - I would be very surprised if they weren't made in the same factory. The Harley Benton AC Pro 60 has proclaimed as being the Tanglewood T6 amp rebranded. I've bought other Thomann house branded stuff and have never been disappointed so I hope you like your mandolin!

Not necessarily, unless that's what you think you would go for... With most of the 'budget' threads on here being focused on the needs of a beginner, I was curious as to what more experienced players, used to better guitars, with whatever set-up & lutherie skills they had picked up along the way, might do if suddenly forced to shop for themselves on a bare minimum budget. Probably a new or second user Yamaha with electrics built in.

My working guitars were both electric, but if I was going out acoustic I'd go for an Ibanez AE305-NT, which comes in around 500 quid. I love the clean, mellow combination of mahogany and sitka spruce, the combination in the old Ibanez AW1000ECE that remains my main acoustic. Also excellent electronics, by the by.
If it had to be really budget budget I'd try out any Vintage or Recording Kings I could lay my hands on. They don't seem to make bad instruments, and you can pick up some individual boxes that really speak.

I saw Dave Peabody a few years ago getting great amplified sound out of a modest Freshman - he reckoned it was as good a gigging guitar as he’d had.

My only guitar I use out and about is a Sigma ooo 15. Now you can't go by my word, as I'm inexperienced, but Phil Hickin, Paul Mac, Dan Sealey and many other pro's seem to have loved it after "borrowing" it. Mind you, it might be the Baggs pick up they really like. Guitar cost? About £250

Hmmm ps.... Maybe they like it because the great Alan Exley set it up?

Dan Walsh was using a Freshman until recently (when he acquired a Fylde). Plugged in with a Baggs M1 it sounded great, although I felt it lacked something on the odd occasion I saw him play unamplified, particularly when he'd just swapped from a Deering banjo.

It may have been a Crafter that Peabody was playing but it was pretty cheap. Age memory and all that!
