Great to change things up.
Got a Lowden Baritone 50 tuned down to A.
I had a Taylor baritone 8 a few years ago. Sold it. Regretted it. Definitely recommend. Interesting guitar.

Anyone play one? I love the idea of the Taylor 8 string one. I think Robbie aka forestdweller has owned a baritone.

Anyone play one? I love the idea of the Taylor 8 string one. I've never owned one but I've played a few. A few years back I played a Brook Baritone which was one of the best Brooks I have played.
They do give you something different but, for me at least, I'm not sure they really give me much. I have no problem playing in C,D,E,F,G and A really. Bb doesn't come up very often.
They are interesting but I've noticed that many players that have owned and used one often don't seem to use them for long!
But we are all different and that's what makes life exciting!

I’ve played a few yes, including a couple of Brooks and a Taylor. The Taylor was awesome I tried it out in a guitar shop, dropped it down to the A equivalent of dadgad. A buddy of mine used to keep his 660mm Brook in baritone tuning (C to C) and I recorded a version of my Prelude on this on it for my Road to Easterbrook album. Huge sound. Would love to own one that I could keep in dropped A.

Listened to a few clips of the Brook. It sounds just beautiful.

Interesting to try, I owned one for a while but tired of it fairly quickly and sold it. If you play a lot in open tunings they make an interesting change, good for what I describe as "noodling around music" but it wasn't for me.

Anyone know who built the first baritone and who for?

Chris. Do you mean a certain Mr Bown for a certain Mr Simpson? Depends on what is meant by baritone. Lower tuned fretted instruments go way back.

Yes they do but generally in octaves or in much bigger bodies. Ralph was the first to take a standard guitar size and simply extend the neck to around 27 inches adding 3 frets.

I have owned a Danelectro Vintage 51 electric and recently got my hands on the Alvarez AT60E Electro acoustic Baritone and must say it was the best under £500 electro-acoustic I've ever invested in.
Out of the box quite a bit of buzzing here and there as the action is quite low for a baritone imo but nothing that can't be fixed. Acoustic sound is very well balanced whilst not as loud and big as I would have hoped for considering its a Jumbo bodied guitar, but it does pack a good punch.
Plugged in for me is where it really shines. Comes with the LR Baggs system and has a great plugged in sound and with a tad bit of reverb it just opens up for so much great experimentation I can't seem to put it down. Very true to its acoustic sound i barely had to mess around with the 3 system EQ. I'm tuned in standard B for now.
I would definitely invest in another acoustic baritone at some point in my life but I have a feeling this Alvarez will provide me a great deal of fun for some years to come. If anyone is interested in picking up an acoustic baritone I'd definitely recommend it!

Anyone looking for a reasonably priced 8 string baritone along the lines of the Taylor one should note that this has just been announced by Guild: guildguitars.com/g/bt-258-deluxe/
