I had recently posted a couple of threads related to finding a new acoustic and received some really helpful replies and advice. As a result I eventually decided to go ahead and look at luthier built guitars rather than buying an off the shelf guitar from Martin or any of the other large manufacturer. I also decided that the body size that would best work for me would be an OM.
Initially I found an Oxwood OM made by a guy called Brad Daniels in the USA; this was one of 4 guitars hand built by Brad for TAMCO back in 2014. Therefore, this was effectively an off the shelf guitar but made to the high standards you would expect from a sole luthier. I did consider several other luthier built guitars but the Oxwood OM seemed to tick all the boxes and was comfortably below my upper budget.
Long story short I ended up with the Oxwood and after a week playing the guitar I can honestly say that it is the finest acoustic I have ever owned or played other, possibly, than a Froggy Bottom D I bought back in 1999. But you can't really compare a dread and an OM I guess.
I had wanted rosewood/spruce but did look at other options and one of the reasons I was unsure about the Oxwood OM is that it was spruce/mahogany. However, I just love the mahogany/spruce combination, it hits the spot perfectly and does everything I want an acoustic to do. It handles fingerpicking and flat picking incredibly well and has a superb bass response with crisp and rounded trebles. The previous owner had used it in DADGAD which worked amazingly well and I have been using it in standard which is also superb. It seems to excel in both.
It has extremely precise Gotoh tuners, although I don't know which model they are, and also came with a K&K Pure Mini installed which seems to be an amazingly natural and versatile pickup. In fact the pickup was a total surprise as it had not been advertised as having a pickup installed!
The sunburst had faded to a very nice honeyburst which looks different in every light. Beautifully applied finish too which I believe is nitro. Fingerboard, bridge, heel, truss rod cover and headstock face are ebony with a ebony/mahogany sandwich to the rear of the headstock.
Really couldn't be happier with the guitar; it normally takes me months to decide whether an acoustic is right for me and yet after a week it is clear that it hits the spot in every area. Have taken some rubbish photos which I'll post below.
Thanks for all the help and advice I received, it really did guide me to making the right decision.......
