That’s a great version. I didn’t even know Bert Jansch had covered October Song. I love the Incredible String Band version... great lyrics.

That was lovely, been listening to the ISB version all month. I once embarrassed myself by drunkenly pestering Robin Williamson after one of his solo gigs... "Robin I wanted to tell you that October Song changed my life man" or some such nonsense. He was very good about it.

Do you know any really good tab or tutorials that show how the original recording was played?

Do you know any really good tab or tutorials that show how the original recording was played? Sorry, no. I did try to work it out years ago, but I don't think I got it quite right and I've since forgotten how I did it. I might try again.

I used this to get a basic idea, and listening to the clip above and obviously Bert Jansch version too. After a couple of days I basically have it down, just needs practice.

Cheers NikGnashers - it was the Robin Williamson/ISB original version that I tried to learn years ago. It’s in an open tuning and from listening to the record `I could never quite work out what the tuning was, so I could never get it sounding right. The Jansch version is worth learning too though, so thanks for the link

Thanks Nik. Yeah I think I read it was Open D or something, on the original. OK, found this in a folder of ISB tab/chords I have:
"I'm lead to believe that on the original Robin uses an open D tuning (DADF#AD) with a capo at the fifth fret, making the actual key G. However, it works pretty well in standard tuning."
But he just shows the chords, not the fingerpicking:
G C G I'll sing you this October song,
D7 G Oh, there is no song before it,
C G The words and tune are none of my own,
D7 G For my joys and sorrows bore it.
G7 C G Beside the sea, the brambly briars
D7 G In the still of evening,
C G Birds fly out behind the sun,
D7 G And with them I'll be leaving.

No worries chaps, I found the Jansch version sounds bang on with the capo on 4th fret (standard tuning). You can reach all of the extra little notes and hammer ons / pull offs quite easily.
Singing at the same time however lol .......

I’m impressed that you have a folder of ISB songs I absolutely love them, but I only ever learned a handful of their songs, which I’ve now forgotten. I’m going to have another go at October Song - open D sounds like it may well be right. In the meantime you might enjoy a cover of You Can't Keep Me Here by my daughter, which I taught her remotely when she was covid isolating recently: fb.watch/8PDs9F7_A2/

That's a lovely cover, your daughter is a great singer and player! I can't sing to save my life, let alone at the same time as playing.
Yes, huge ISB and Clive Palmer fan here, although it took me years to "get" them. I tried for over a decade, and then one day it just clicked. They are undoubtedly my fave band of the last six years or so, but have still only explored the first six albums. I managed to get a signed copy of the Be Glad book a few years ago, which collects many of the articles from the early issues of the fanzine of the same name, that was started by my friend Andy Roberts in the 90s. I haven't learned many of their songs yet either, I do passable renditions of the easier Mike Heron strummy ones like You Get Brighter, Greatest Friend and the end part of A Very Cellular Song. There's a really good ISB FB group with loads of documents archived, I might have found some of the tab there. The band I'm in covered Clive's (when not in the ISB) song A Leaf Must Fall a few years back too.
