just as an aside, how big was this tree? It seems to have generated an awful lot of superb guitar back and side sets This article says it was 12000 board feet, which I think is 1000 cubic feet. I have read somewhere that originally it was used for furniture and room panelling, so I guess most of it wasn't used for guitars. Interesting question though.

Why doesn't the 'Tree' come with a certificate?

Why doesn't the 'Tree' come with a certificate? Jonny With that number of certificates you'd need to cut several more trees down to make the paper.

It'd be quite something if someone asked how much you'd paid for a guitar and you were able to answer 4,675,000. OK, so you don't admit it's Yen. That translation is quite a bit of work though, isn't it? My favourite line is: "Mr. Terry Nakamoto, who was enrolled in Yamaha at that time, is a masterpiece that is also highly regarded as a model at the end of the Yamaha era" So not just a luthier, but a model as well as a masterpiece. davewhite could you say the same?

I want points for pedantry when I say it would be 4,250, 000 because it's for export (so no Japanese sales tax). But on the downside you'd be subject to 20% VAT and 4% import tax when it arrived. You'd probably get a better deal if you contact them directly and ask for a best price. I bought my LL-56 from them last year. They were very good.

It will have been preordered so it was actually sold when they made the video. Let’s compare guitars to cars. The object of a car is transport from point A to point B. If a used car costing say £2500 will get you there why pay more? In 10 years a £32000 car will lose 90% or more of its value. What will the Kostal be worth in 10 years? Hell of a lot more than the car! Assuming it stays in a case or hangs on a wall or stays in a safe and never gets played. And what's the point in that? Have you seen Willie Nelson's guitar? That's a guitar that gets played. (And yes I know it's probably worth more than the Kostal but that's because it was Willie who played it - if it was you or me it would be firewood). Why would it need to stay in its case? I am very well aware of guitars worth well into 5 figures out on stands in the living room and played very frequently. Their value has continued to increase. Yes I’ve seen Willie Nelson’s guitar very close up actually but why use such an extreme example? Do you think every Martin from the 30s that sells for more than the Kostal has been in its case since new?

Hell of a lot more than the car! I think £2500 is a lot to spend on a car. Have you seen my car, Chris? I paid £1600 8 years ago. It passed its MOT yesterday, so its set to go on for another year. Looks like hell, but it gets me to Halifax, so I need nothing more. It’s worth as much as NewDave’s Willie Nelson guitar knockoff. I would spend substantially more on a guitar than I would a car. And although you may be right about the value of the Kostal in a few years, as Ian alluded to in his post, this fairy dream of new build guitars increasing in value has to stop somewhere. There are more and more builders out there trying to catch this wave. It’ll all end in tears, I tell ye! I agree 100% that the bubble will burst, some would argue that the highest price levels attract buyers who are rich enough to keep buying in a downturn but I think it’s gone beyond that. I know luthiers whose order books emptied overnight back in 2007/8. It’ll happen again. My point was that even if the $32,000 guitar lost 75% of its value it would still be worth more than a ten year old car with a similar list price today.

Well, it wasn't that long ago that someone taped a banana to a wall and sold it for $120,000. By comparison, 32k for a guitar seems fairly reasonable
