Nice playing delb0y. It's a really nice tune, too. I agree that the more melodic (slower) players have a lot to offer. Some the the acrobatics I see some G.J. guitarists do, reminds me of some metal players and can be a little OTT. It's the phrasing that is the most important, to my ears.

Had an upright bass player at today's GJ session. Does that mean the duo is about to become a trio? Not sure, but it sounded good. The whole thing is very loose so I imagine it may be both a duo and a trio.
In other news I've just put some new tuning pegs on the D500. Just going to clean the fretboard and then I'll put on some Argentines. Might even then take a photo or two :-)

Be very interested to see the new tuners and the old. Bass can add a lot to the G.J. sound, IMO. Just need a fiddle player now. I've been working on an original tune. Also been playing with different picks and improving my playing position. Very much going with the traditional arm and hand positioning. Pick wise, although I enjoy the feel of a very thick plectrum, the tone never sounds right to me. I find the best for me is 1 to 1.4. Loads to learn and so far it's been fun. Pagelli Gitane Nouveaux. Ermmm!

I use a Wegen pick - it's quite thick, maybe 3mm? I've had it years and really should get a back up. I've attached photos of the new tuners and the old - the old are probably the same as on yours. Nothing wrong with them, but I really didn't like the look, and as the guitar was quite old I didn't mind tinkering with it a little. Also done a quick demo of the D500 with the new Argentine (11s) on there. They are still a bit bright - but very easy to play and bend! It's not a great improvisation, but I'm actually pleased at how my new methodology is enabling me to solo over swing tunes. A few years ago I'd have had to work out these things in advance. I still tend to get a bit "rabbit in headlights" and forget many of the ideas, lines, ii-V-is, and so on that I'm slowly adding to my palette. But it is coming.

Those new tuners do look a lot nicer. Love the buttons. Love that Autumn Leaves classic, as well. Some very nice improv there, with some tasty left hand vibrato. I deffo need to work on improv. Here's a rather exotic beauty. Milan Ciz F Hole Gypsy Jazz Manouche Skellig Michael.

Referring to previous posts, here is little Jimmy Rosenberg (aged 11) playing on a Washburn electro.
Some player.

Ah, I reckon if I keep practising then when I'mm eleven I might be able to do that...
Probably not wise to post my efforts straight after a Jimmy Rosenberg video, even if he was just eleven. But here goes anyway. Still not sounding particularly "gypsy" but as I've been saying for forty years, it's early days :-)
D500 again, mostly melody and a few pre-learned licks:

Yeah, pretty good,delb0y. Some nice runs there. How would you compare your oval and d hole guitars, sonically and feel wise? This Eastman has some charm.

I've always liked the look of those Eastmans. I've read many good things about Eastmans In general. I reckon that would be a fine guitar.
Comparing my two GJ guitars. It's early days. The oval hole has the tighter more focused sound. The D hole is much brighter (but I suspect that it's the new strings). I have to work harder to control the sound on the D hole - the chords tend to ring out too much and there's a lot of sympathetic ringing from all six stings when I'm playing runs. But the feel is an absolute delight on the D hole. The wide neck and twelve frets make it so easy to play that the oval feels cramped in comparison. Obviously access to he higher frets is easier on the oval, but the easy of string bending and vibrato on the D compensates. I shall keep playing both and see where things lead.
Definitely want a twelve fretter for my fingerstyle playing now, though

I must admit, I do fancy an oval holed model as well. I'll be keeping an eye out for preowned stuff and am going to the Pudsey guitar show soon, so who knows? I bought a small pack of Dunlop Flow 1.14 picks and they have become my go-to pick for G.J. Love 'em.

Very nice stuff here. GJ is something I'd like to get into once I can play that is. I have a disk of Django that I need to listen to...

Minor Swing is a great tune to start with. The melody is very simple, there are just three chords, and so you can improvise with real simple arpeggios.

I'm probably one of the least-qualified people on the planet to give a gypsy jazz lesson as I'm very much a beginner myself. But in the interests of keeping this thread ticking over, and for anyone who'd like to try this but has never played any GJ at all, here's a two minute very basic lesson I rustled up. This is about 90% of what I know and play as regards GJ. If you compare what I explain here to any of my earlier videos in the thread, you can see that this is pretty much all I'm doing. Oh, and you can do this on any guitar. You definitely don't need a GJ specific guitar.
Cheers D

Nice starter lesson delb0y. Could be done on any guitar but it's fun to have the excuse to get something different Altamira M20.
