Here's a primitive (a 78 from 1937) recording of the grand master, having a little fun.

Does look like a good deal with the extras on the guitar. Going to join the club?

So do these guitars have a unique sound or is it the style of playing? Would GJ played on a regular guitar still sound like GJ?

You can play gypsy jazz on any guitar. Indeed, many of the old videos of the masters (in their early days) show these guys playing on whatever guitar was at hand. But the GJ specific guitars do have a certain sound and vibe, and if nothing else, help generate enthusiasm to practice!

The duo hasn't rehearsed since early December due to Christmas and other reasons. But we had a practice today and though my gypsy picking technique has been adversely affected by a few weeks of strictly alternating picking (that'll be flat-picking to blame) we still sounded pretty darn good. I even played the clarinet on one tune, and it certainly sounded passable, although not sure I'll use it on the gig. Yes, you read that right, we have a gig in the diary :-) First one for this duo, and it's only an afternoon session at HMV. But, after a few open mics, it's progress in the right direction.

Nice one delb0y. Let us know how it goes and perhaps a recording?

Trying to work up a bit of Duke Ellington for the inaugural gig in a couple of weeks:

Well... One of the strangest gigs / performances I've played! Sat in the corner of HMV, taped off like we were in a crime scene, and ignored by just about everyone save for a few young kids and the occasional jazz fan. Furthermore we were in the "sale" section (£55 for three vinyl albums! What??? Mind you I haven't seen so much vinyl in a record shop since about 1980). Nevertheless the management loved it and have asked us back if we want. And, in a way, it's something I never thought would happen - me playing an hour and a half of jazz live. We played a set comprised of the usual 30s and 40s swing and gypsy jazz standards: Minor Swing, Sweet Georgia Brown, All Of Me, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Avalon etc etc. Generally quite happy with my playing, although I do have to keep reminding myself to relax.
