As promised here are the guitars. Two De Faoite's - "Lughnasa": "Buachaill Mor": And Jonny's Jason Kostal MD: So now match the guitars to the sound clips. To give you a clue "Lughnasa" and Jonny's Kostal had new strings on and "Buachaill Mor" had some well gigged strings on

Sorry, comparisons are not valid - greater standardisation needed - different smile with each guitar, and cheeks parked ever so slightly differently on sofa. Keith

Ha ha - the smiles are quite an accurate guide to my feelings for each guitar.

I cannot take seriously the opinions of anyone who doesn't comb their hair. I don't care how hip you are, Mosco ... you're dead to me...

He probably spent a lot of time, and used a lot of products, to get it looking like that Leo. You're just jealous!

Well I listened twice and felt like this both times
Track 3: Ist cos itb souded the most rounded and sweet treble
TRack 2: 2nd sounded more bassy , but a scratchy treble
Track1: always last , lacked bass and trebles still scratchy
Hope that will help the game progress besr regs Peter

Objectively, since Track 2 received 3 times as many first preferences as any other track, and Kostal guitars cost at least 3 times what Dave charges, can we deduce, logically, that Track 2 was recorded on the Kostal?
I'll have a guess that Track 1 is Buachaill Mor.

I've just listened on the laptop as I haven't got around to buying a lead to connect it to anything. I made a point of listening before looking at other people's comments, and I dread to think what this says about my aural discernment or lack of, but I had to listen twice before being able to distinguish between the three tracks. Eventually I decided that I preferred track 1, and can't tell the difference between tracks 2 and 3. When you get to the louder bit at about 20 seconds, and the picky bit after about 23 seconds I thought it sounded fuller and clearer (is the best way I can describe it). (My ears aren't great tonight, after 40 miles on the M6 wind tunnel).
Based on this, I wouldn't pay more at all, but would be willing to pay a few hundred extra for a guitar that enabled me to produce a better sound.
Edit. Didn't notice that the thread had gone onto 3 pages. Just looked at the guitars and I'm none the wiser.

Having played all three of these particular guitars at various times I am unable to decide which is which from the recordings. You can't beat what a guitar actually feels like to play, (so much of a guitar's "sound" for a player is inextricably linked to the tactile sensations of playing it) and recordings give no info about this or much sense of the oomph and responsiveness of an instrument. So, when it comes to matching the recordings to the actual guitars I'm going to pass. Keith Keith

I'm with Keith Keith on this...
Haven't played any of these guitars.
Be very interested in finding out the truth though.

Alasdair, For the "truth" see my response to Joe (aka Mike Floorstand's) post above. Track 1 was Buachaill Mor, Track 2 the Kostal and Track 3 Lughnasa. That will teach me to be too mean to put new strings on Buachaill Mor having put them on Jonny's Kostal and Lughnasa The Kostal was the winner of this "Game". All three guitars have their own nuances but are all very good guitars indeed - "brothers and sisters" as Jonny says - and I'm happy to have heard them played together by Jonny and hold my head high with pride for the two De Faoite's. This is a fun game that hopefully can be repeated by others here on the Forum.

Well I'll go with the flow and say 2, 3, 1... although at times I might prefer 3 over 2 depending on how I felt. I did wonder whether 2 had the older strings and that may have contributed to what I heard as a woodier, rounder tone. The other two sounded more zingy and steely... more string? I listened and decided before looking at the pics. Because 3 and 1 seemed to share a common genepool to my ears I'll say 2 is the Kostal. If this is anything like Friday Forum Giveaway, I'll have it all arseabout and will lose... there is a prize isn't there? Thanks Dave and Jonny for taking the time to do this. Cheers, marcus
