So, when the general public ask me which guitar I prefer, I'll now be able to say that it's Buachaill Mor - or, at least, I would if I knew how to pronounce it. I'll just say it's a bit like the one with the Etive in the middle but without the Etive.

Alasdair, For the "truth" see my response to Joe (aka Mike Floorstand's) post above. Track 1 was Buachaill Mor, Track 2 the Kostal and Track 3 Lughnasa. That will teach me to be too mean to put new strings on Buachaill Mor having put them on Jonny's Kostal and Lughnasa The Kostal was the winner of this "Game". All three guitars have their own nuances but are all very good guitars indeed - "brothers and sisters" as Jonny says - and I'm happy to have heard them played together by Jonny and hold my head high with pride for the two De Faoite's. This is a fun game that hopefully can be repeated by others here on the Forum. Hi Dave, Very interesting. I agree with you - it was a fun game. You also have every right to hold your head up, as these recordings show. I'm disappointed that I won't now have the chance to play any of your guitars this year. Fingers crossed for next year. Have a great time at Halifax Best wishes, Alasdair. PS Perhaps I'll get around to doing something similar with my guitars. I certainly enjoyed this adventure. Many thanks.

I mentioned in another thread that Roger Bucknall had built, for a University analysis, several guitars of the same specification but using different woods for the backs and sides. To quote the latest Fylde Newsletter: "The experiment will attempt to determine how the type of wood used in the back and sides of a guitar affects the perceived sound quality and playability of the guitar. So does Brazilian Rosewood sound different to Sapele, and if so, in what ways does it sound different?
We are also investigating what words people use to describe guitar sound quality, and how these words relate to the woods used in construction. For example, does a particular wood make a guitar sound as if it has more "clarity" than other guitars.
The unique aspect of this experiment is that the guitars will be identical in shape and weight, and will be played in a darkened room, so that participants won't be able to determine the wood used in construction based on looks or feel. We hope!"More details are to be found HERE.Brian

My thanks too to Dave and Jonny for their time and trouble in doing this. Interesting, informative and entertaining - plus a useful ear training exercise. Despite that massive price differential - I believe x3 was mentioned - it was very difficult to choose between the three tracks and put them in an order - not a huge amount of difference. So the experiment also shows the great sound quality of your guitars Dave - and they sound damn good even with old strings on them!! Mark

#1: track 1. best ballance of bass, mid and trebble. I especially like the warm sound. I thing I've played that one. Track 1 was Buachaill Mor, I knew it I should have been confident enough to name the Big Boy then and there.
