...any good? Just wondered as I sold my last three classicals, and was thinking of a replacement should other sales go well

I've played a few of their flamenco guitars, and the ones less than a grand have been fairly underwhelming.

Martin I am no expert, and so much of course depends on your anticipated "investment" but I have seen some good reviews on a maker of the name Paco Castillo. I believe the company may have been formed by ex. Alhambra employees, but from my searches it seems there is much cloak and dagger going on as to the origins of many so called hand built classicals.

Thanks herb, the reason I asked about this maker is that one is available near me at a decent price. Just wondered if there was any opinions on them before I commit.

In case it makes any difference, it's a model 3M cedar/rosewood I'm looking at. Retail at around £1100, available in A+ condition with Hiscox case for £300

At that price it looks a real steal! I think the Burguet student models could be made at the Esteve factory which is no bad thing. I've played similarly priced Manuel Adalid and Juan Hernandez guitars both made at the Esteve factory and thought them both outstanding. With a hiscox case the value of the guitar should be more like 785.

Martin sounds like a bargain to me, just the Hiscox case, if it's the standard classical, is £97 retail, so basically the guitar is £200. So not a lot to lose if you end up not liking it.
I did make one of my Torres classicals to replace the guitar your referring to for one of the RCMs new students, but the thing is the Burguet had got him all the way to the college doors, and to be honest sounded a lot better to me than another player's Smallman which I was also replacing.
So go bite his hands off would be my advice.
Colin

Thanks all very much for the encouragement. Advice taken. Hand bitten off The guitar is lovely, with only a very few minor bumps and scrapes. The case is indeed Hiscox, an older model but in good condition, although it too has a small bash in it. Still, it is a great little package for not a lot of money, and will make a nice classical noodler for me, and a step up guitar for my daughter when/if she re-embarks on her lessons.

Congratulations on your new (used) guitar ! A lot of steel players prefer carbon strings on a classical guitar, the carbon trebles give a a much brighter sound and are thinner than nylon. Classicals can sound great in DADGAD too. I hope your daughter has big hands.

Martin my standard carbon strings for a classical, the ones I always start with and I send out on all of my guitars are standard tension Savarez Corums with the Alliance Trebles. Until you get to the really expensive Aquila nylgut solid silver wound strings these are about the best in my opinion. On my personal guitars though I used natural gut. Colin
