Wow, that's a great video by Martin Simpson (despite the sound and images being out by about a second on my machine - but that's something I've noticed happens here in the Soundboard). We do that song in one of my ensembles, but now I won't be happen with our version! I saw him live not long after that performance on Jools Holland. He said he'd started the song way too fast and thought about stopping, but because he was being filmed he decided to keep going and see if he could hold it together. That explains why the sound and the pictures are out of sync. One of the hazards of playing faster than the speed of light. Well, that and everyone thinking you're a flash git...

Ragamuffin.
Just love it, first heard it about 20 years ago,
90% there, but I've been at 90% there for a couple of weeks now!
As well as the weird (for me) percussive bits, there is some precise fingering and damping required. Quite a workout.
Anyone else had a go?

Nettle Wine, Ralph McTell I used to play that a lot - you have to learn it from the tab book and not the LP because of that edit!

If I was to have to choose just one track, I think it would be this one. The original album version included the use of a slide, but I prefer the capo'd / fingered version played live here and that's the way I'd like to play it if I could ..... in my dreams! He pulls at the strings of the guitar and of the heart in one go. Coupled with 'Mother Love' as in this live performance it is even better. Mark Martin has tabbed this out, along with Mother Love, both of which are available on his web site (www.martinsimpson.com). It's definitely worth having a crack at and not as hard as it seems, although you do need to develop a good deal of left hand fluidity. Duncan and Brady is probably the more difficult piece when you factor in the vocals as well. You might want to consider attending one of Martin's weekend workshops. It is a great experience, so much so, that many come for repeat sessions. Cheers, Ian BTW, the tuning here is CGCGCD - G suspended 4 over 4 - capo'd at 3, so B flat...

I thought that too as CGCGCD is usually referred to as Csus2 or cadd9, but the strings do follow a root 4th and 5th if you consider it a G tuning rather than a C. We await a definitive answer and reason.

Yes, it is CGDGCD - I'm working on it at the moment with a couple of students. Nice straightforward piece, just one or two areas that may need special attention, but if you're used to alternating bass, it is achievable without too much effort.

Yes I did (mean CGDGCD - Currently have an appalling cold which I was/am treating with a mixture of shyte from GlaxoSmithKline and copious amounts of red wine...

That was the vid that first got me interested in Ben and Josie - lovely! Found it by accident shortly after it was posted when I was looking for Fotheringay (band) videos.
I'm sure you could play that Paul. Not sure about getting the recorder bit going simultaneously though....

I do remember that I had to play it very regularly. If there was any real gap it was a real struggle to get the party moving fluidly again. Must have another try. SaveSave

The theme from 'Question Time'. Originally it was played on the guitar, written by Stanley Myers, but the score doesn't seem to exist. I bought a version a few years ago, but it's not that complete.
I'd like to play it, not only for the challenge, but for nostalgic reasons as it reminds me of watching Question Time, as a child, with my dad when I should have been in bed.

Tell Her to Come Back Home by John Fahey.
I can play the first sections but, as soon as the man joins in the dance, I stutter and stop. Is this deeply significant?

Outside of the pit band work I do I try to avoid reproducing arrangements and go my own way. It's more about looking for tone and touch to me. If I could get the golden sound of Earl Scruggs' guitar on this I'd be a happy man.
