Both parts at the same time would be cool!

I've been trying to learn the mandolin for the last year and if I could play like this I'd be happy. It's a 20 second break by Mike Compton and it gets better every time I listen to it - it starts at 2:15. 'It's all in the right hand' as they say. I think its the flow he gets.

If I was to have to choose just one track, I think it would be this one. The original album version included the use of a slide, but I prefer the capo'd / fingered version played live here and that's the way I'd like to play it if I could ..... in my dreams! He pulls at the strings of the guitar and of the heart in one go. Coupled with 'Mother Love' as in this live performance it is even better. Mark Martin has tabbed this out, along with Mother Love, both of which are available on his web site (www.martinsimpson.com). It's definitely worth having a crack at and not as hard as it seems, although you do need to develop a good deal of left hand fluidity. Duncan and Brady is probably the more difficult piece when you factor in the vocals as well. You might want to consider attending one of Martin's weekend workshops. It is a great experience, so much so, that many come for repeat sessions. Cheers, Ian BTW, the tuning here is CGCGCD - G suspended 4 over 4 - capo'd at 3, so B flat... Thank you for the info and suggestions Ian. so ... "left hand fluidity" .... I might need a time machine then. I have in the past considered one of those weekends of his. But I would feel right out of my depth in the presence of such a hugely talented musician. Mark

Martin He is great isn't he? There's a lot of Bill Monroe's technique in his sound, but there are so many subtle tone colours and rhythmic nuances that are unique to him. Bill sometimes seemed to be teasing the band by playing in his own unique time and throwing in his own surprising growls, barks, chops and syncopations, while Compton seems to have looked at him and thought, "Okay Bill, I know exactly what you are doing there but this is me. I live in this warmer, airier space."

For me its Cavatina. Not the sort of thing I usually play. Usually I consider myself a (very average) folk guitarist. I think if I could play this then I'd e a "proper" guitarist. Dream on Janey! Cavatina - John Williams

Thank you for all your replies in this thread, I have found it fascinating to see the wide range of music we all aspire to. I just wanted to mention, I tried learning my 'dream tune' last week, and so far have failed miserably LOL .... I can just about get bars 1 to 4 ok, which are pretty simple, but bars 5 & 6 require you to travis pick the low e, a, & d strings with your thumb (easy peasy) but at the same time play triplets on the other three strings with your three fingers. Computer says no (brain)

Ok, it's a banjo (had to be ), but it's different. To be able to play as cleanly, efficiently and accurately as this! And what a hypnotic tune/sound too

Because I'm an old rocker at heart. You can't beat a bit of Blackmore.
