Here's the second tip on practising a piece: isolating the melody, relevant for all styles and levels.

This video explores, all too briefly, the most important aspect of making music... not just interpretation, but communication. Cheers Jonny

Very good video Jonny, and a fine example of why interpretation is so important. Reminds me of why I tired of classical lessons when interpretation was hardly touched upon. Mark

Thanks andyhowell and vikingbluesHopefully the next video will help with choosing the right sort of pieces to aid development. In a nutshell, don't get bogged down with pieces well beyond your standard and avoid pieces you don't like! Jonny

Time for another exercise! This one focuses on free and rest strokes and is pretty essential (even for steel string fingerstyle players). Thanks for all the interest so far and for your messages, all very encouraging and I'm glad the blog is useful. Jonny

I'm really enjoying these, jonnymosco. Struggling with a few, but bowling ahead with others ...

Thanks for sticking with them leoroberts. This one should help with smooth playing and economy of movement: left hand finger preparation. Perhaps difficult to adjust to at first (focusing on fingers that aren't fretting), but if you scribble reminders on the music, eventually control will become more straightforward. Jonny

Got to be better than playing with myself!
For reasons unknown I have started with stretching2. I already see it’s goung to be a challenge. Thanks for these videos, I needed something to get me progressing again and I think these will be a big help.

Here's a handy hint that minimises left hand finger movements, two for the price of one. Using this technique helps the left hand become more efficient resulting in smoother playing. Cheers Jonny

A piece of music would be very boring if there was no variation in volume. This video looks at a basic approach to, and the technical implications of, playing dynamics. They are best implemented early on in practise, not added later. Always scribble all crescendos and diminuendos on the score once you have worked them out. Cheers Jonny

Cheers Jonny I enjoyed that Jonny Dynamics are so important in music. It is so difficult to execute effectively (as I have discovered with my own playing limitations) but done well can greatly enhance even the most simple of pieces. Phil
