My Heiner Dreizehnter has a lovely bass response. In fact it was that that smote me and made me buy it. Tazzie blackwood throughout. I don't know whether that has anything to do with the bass response or not; I suspect the answer is 'partly'. My Walker in adi/maple is balanced but also has a great bass response. I guess I would say that its tonal range was wider than my other guitars, so more bass and more treble but still balanced. Talk to a luthier would be my suggestion, one that you know has a signature sound that you know you like. I'm thinking Brook?

Thanks oustudent . My Spanish isn’t very good, so I couldn’t make much headway with that website. As for experimenting, I guess I have done a lot of that over the years, and am sort of reaching a point where, should I have the money to buy a Brook again, it’s going to have to be ‘the one’. That’s why this decision is so important to me. Robbie

Well, despite me having offloaded so many Brooks over the years, Si is still a very good friend, and hasn’t got exasperated with me yet! I like what they do- their workmanship is second to none, and we have a pretty good idea about what works for my music. I have made some huge mistakes over the last few years (in all sorts of ways) But I have never ever regretted buying a Brook. Each one has a fond memory to me. So yeh, when I have saved up enough (I have a deposit now 🙂) it will be a Brook. Robbie

I had a quick look at Madagascar and I was surprised that in comparison to IRW it isn't that much more expensive when you consider the overall costs. Madagascar could only be £100.00 more compared to IRW. This is dependant on what Brook would charge you for it. I wouldn't rule out Madagascar until you have spoken to Si and compared the prices.

I suspect that there's no magic brand, model, tonewood etc to this issue - as seems so often the case with acoustic guitars. You hear a really nice full bass response on an XXY 44 guitar with a yyyyy top and qqqq back and sides. Then you try another one of the same model somewhere else and it's not the same at all. Trial and error searching or faith in a proper luthier who can mould a build to what you want seems best. I've reached the stage of having no expectations when picking up a particular guitar, as they're so variable. Mark

Really? Well, if I can get Madagascan rosewood for hat price it would be a no brainier. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll talk to Si. Robbie

Just had a look at that site oustudent, they have some amazing g sets of Madagascan and Cocobolo. Trouble is you have to add 65 euros on top for cites. But still might be a possibility. Thanks a lot for the link, really helpful. Robbie

I've certainly not noticed any great difference in the bass between rosewood and mahogany guitars but then I play with a thumb pick — the biggest problem I have is watching the bass. I have played some lovely resonant mahogany guitars though I don;'t own one.
The only significant difference for me comes with recording — all the overtones of a good rosewood guitar can be more difficult to handle.

Robbie, I sourced the Madagascar for my new Lyn from Madinter. They were recommended to me by Simon and I had the set delivered direct to Brook.
There was no CITES payment involved as the purchase and delivery was all in the EU.
Good luck.

It would be a good idea to get the CITES documentation especially if you want to travel with the instrument outside the UK post Brexit or sell it to someone who will want to.

I must admit that at this stage I am thinking of replicating the 12fret Tamar I am currently borrowing, especially if I can source either cocobolo or madrose for the back and sides. The dynamic range of this thing is absolutely enormous. Not the easiest to play above the 12 fret, but then I do not often venture up there. That’s what harmonics are for after all 😉. Either that or an OM. Robbie p.s I just remembered that the only problem with cocobolo is that it’s poisonous to work with. I wouldn’t want any guitar being made for me to harm its maker. I know some luthiers (Fylde and Phil Davidson) refuse to work with it.

I have an Avalon A380 Sitka over Cocobolo. The bass response is really clear and easily my favourite guitar (of mine) for Fingerstyle. The notes are more fundamental and less overtones in the bass than my irw backed guitars. It’s also the best amplified (with a K&k pickup.) Vinny
