J I haven’t shown him the MB or the Coco but he absolutely loved the madrose, and said it would pair well with adi. Robbie p.s as For weight of the MB you obviously haven’t tried one of NK Fosters instruments!

Hope for a win on the lottery tonight and order all three on Monday I think they would all be good, I am 55/50 on the Cocobolo and Madagascan J Yeh, I keep reading how MB is heavy and dense and I see words like glassy, “less brittle than such and such”, and Geral Shepard that’s that will the bass is solid it decays quickly. I like the colour of cocobolo immensely- it has the reddish look of bubinga, and I think it would fit in with the red trim I like so much. However, that madrose is just stunning! Robbie

Thanks for this link Vinny. I found it interesting what he said about Adirondack, as I though it was stiffer than Sitka. Obviously not. But at least he agrees on its sound quality! Robbie

I think I've read a few bits and pieces here and there about MBW guitars being prone to cracking, which like Xiricote which has such reputation. Did you ever play the Spruce/Xiricote Beneteau OM in TAMCO? That was one of the richest sounding OM's I've played, very balanced across the tonal spectrum but it was the rich dark tonality of the lower strings that I found myself most taken by.

That was one of the richest sounding OM's I've played, very balanced across the tonal spectrum but it was the rich dark tonality of the lower strings that I found myself most taken by. Hey Wiggy, how are things? We must meet up again. No I try not to play anything in Tamco which I can’t afford, which is basically everything! Although the new guy there Steve, “insisted” I play some sort of simogyi disciple guitar (forget the name, but it had a lattice rosette which was interesting). I used to have a zirocote guitar. It also had an adi top. Probably a good combo of Woods, but for me at the time it was the wrong type of guitar (J45 style). Robbie

Off to do some research It's a naturally occurring White Spruce/Sitka spruce hybrid, both Dave and I have used it a lot, apart from pure White Spruce it is my favourite North American spruce. Personally never been very fond of Sitka or the currently available Adirondack, always preferring European spruce or Caucasian Spruce, but if I could not get them, then I'd happily use good Lutz or White spruce.

Robbie No practical experience of it myself but I have read on the WWW from various sources that Adirondack has the highest stiffness of all top woods across and along the grain. Phil

Robbie, I sourced the Madagascar for my new Lyn from Madinter. They were recommended to me by Simon and I had the set delivered direct to Brook. There was no CITES payment involved as the purchase and delivery was all in the EU. Good luck. Seems like a no brainer then. How did your Brook turn out? I must admit that at this stage I am thinking of replicating the 12fret Tamar I am currently borrowing, especially if I can source either cocobolo or madrose for the back and sides. The dynamic range of this thing is absolutely enormous. Not the easiest to play above the 12 fret, but then I do not often venture up there. That’s what harmonics are for after all 😉. Either that or an OM. Robbie p.s I just remembered that the only problem with cocobolo is that it’s poisonous to work with. I wouldn’t want any guitar being made for me to harm its maker. I know some luthiers (Fylde and Phil Davidson) refuse to work with it. The New Guitar is everything I wanted. Perfect.

I have an SJ with Amazonian rosewood back and sides and a European spruce top, and it has a wonderful bass. Having said that, I do think it's largely down to the builder, then the body size and lastly the wood combo.
