I have a Greenfield & a Ryan. I have owned an Olson, Matsuda, Charis & Hamblin. All different, all special. I have a Kostal & Fredell incoming. (The Ryan Mission GC may be moved on in the near future, let me know if you're interested). Each has its own voice like every other guitar but I don't have the ability to describe the tone of any of them. It's something that you have to experience I guess. I am always happy to let others play my guitars.
Cheers

Beans! Spill 'em Vic! Keith Well, Dave is going to build me an 'Hourglass' Mountain Dulcimer, final specs tbc. But along the lines of European Spruce over Sapele, 25.5" scale, 6 1/2 fret diatonic layout. It will of course be very special. This won't come together for a couple of months so more info when we get to the build stage. Cheers

Anyone have any experience, tips, pointers on what to look for in a Mountain Dulcimer? There seem to be a few cheap ones out there which I don't fancy. McSpadden & Red Kite are available in limited supply in the UK, any others worth a look?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and suggestions. I will try to catch up with some of the basics, and will have a look at justinguitar. Meanwhile, here's another good example of one of the techniques - not the bit where he slaps the guitar at the beginning, but the percussive sound that continues all the way through. It looks like just hitting the strings with the back of the nail - he's wearing picks but most players seem to be doing it without. I can't do this without causing the strings to ring out. I think the effect that you are referring to is the sixth string slapping against the top fret. It's an effect that I use occasionally but I have no idea if it has a technical name but it's not difficult to do. Use the side of your thumb to slap the bass string while palm muting just that string - you just need someone to demonstrate it to you at close quarters & it'll become immediately apparent. Vic

I think I'll wait for Fortnum & Mason. Great idea. Then you could play that Elvis song on a Fortnum & Mason guitar - "You Ain't Nothing But A Truffle Hound Dog" .......or how about 'Love me Tender'(loin)?

I typed a long winded response - then thought better of it & hit delete. I will say however that I think you are missing out on so much (& am in complete agreement with WD's posts on this thread).
Anyone for a Laphroaig?
Cheers Vic
