I got a heavy duty cardboard guitar box from the nice people at The Music Room, Cleckheaton. Used it to ship my Yamaha LA-8 after selling it on ebay. It was nicked in transit.

I've seen Phil Beer both solo and with Show of Hands and prefered his solo performance. I don't really "get" SOH and can't understand the hype.

I met Ewan McColl a couple of times after he and Peggy Seeger had played my local folk club in the late 60's and early 70's. He was a terrific songwriter. His songs are still sung and admired today. I thought as a performer he was pretty good, being blessed with quite a distinctve voice. He did however put forward the theory that you should only sing your own folk music. I think this was in part due to his radid anti-Americanism. It was also phoney as he named himself Ewan McColl and claimed at one time to come from Auchterader Scotland. He was really called James Miller and was from Salford Lancs, the original "Dirty Old Town". I think "difficult" might be a good description of Mr McColl as he knew he was right so there was no point in arguing was there?!

This idea of two songs at once is too much for my tiny brain. I would'nt know where to start with the accompaniment. Looking on the bright side though it would give me the opportunity to bugger-up two songs at once instead of just one at a time.

My view of Folk is that it is the songs that relate to us ordinary people. Songs about love, death, sex, drink, war, work, and quite a few other things as well. Many of these songs were written by those two great writers-- Trad and his pal Anon. Somebody did write them originally though, they did'nt appear out of the blue! There seems to have been a move, particularly in the USA, to define anything played acoustically as Folk, when in reality much of it is acoustic Pop. Modern songs that seem to be accepted as Folk seem to follow-on from the tradition in that they tell of peoples lives. Think Ewan McColl, early Dylan, Ralph McTell, Richard Thompson for example. My view of Country music is that it is a commercialised version of American folk music. I am fortunate to attend quite laid-back Folk song sessions where if occasionally someone performs a rock, pop or Showtune they are appreciated. The "Folk Police" are mellowing.

A pal of mine is an ace spoons player. As spoons and guitar are a serious mismatch I switch to squeezebox to give some loud and bouncy tunes for her to spoon to!

A few years ago I came across a Martin "Eric Clapton" acoustic. It was for sale at what seemed a low price. The vendor advised that the guitar had been badly damaged and repaired. The owner could not afford the repair bill so the guitar was being sold with an honest description to recover the luthiers outlay in time and materials. It had been so badly damaged that it had a complete new top and bracing, and major repairs to the sides. The back and neck were in good order. The "Eric Clapton" label was intact. As the most important parts of the guitar are the top and the bracing with regards the sound, is this still a Martin? given it has a British top and bracing? Although the vendor was totally honest regarding the repairs I often wonder where it went, and how honest the subsequent owner(s) would be when describing it in subsequent sales. Let the buyer beware?

I use Elixirs (12's on the 000 and 13's on the dread) They last for ages although I play at home every day and out once or twice a week. I was talking to a pal at a session a few months ago. He has a nice hand built guitar but it did not sound too good. The A and low E strings went "thump" instead of "twang". I had heard this guitar-make previously and they had always sounded good (It was a Yairi). He had the same uncoated strings on his guitar for nearly two years! I can't see the point in spending lots of cash on a fine guitar then skimping on strings.
