I'll be moving to Thailand in the new year and the humidity is regularly above 90%. I don't own a good acoustic at the moment, but I was wondering about it in case I do, particularly if were to take one from the UK. I do keep a couple of electrics there and there's no problem except for screws going a bit rusty, the set up and necks are solid and I've been under the impression that it's changes in humidity and temperature that causes problems but I'm probably wrong. I'm interested in what people think as well.

I was rooting around my dad's loft yesterday and I found an old but serviceable bagpipes chanter. Got me thinking, I'd love to play bagpipes!

Anyone seen the ad with someone who looks like he's absolutely tearing up a gorgeous Lowden? Sounds like amazing playing but I can't imagine who the ad - for a loan shark company - is aimed at.

Can't say I enjoy changing strings but as it's usually only once a year (whether they need changing or not), I can put up with it.

Aside from writing and performing some of the Byrds' biggest hits, Gene Clark's career was pretty disastrous in terms of commercial success, but it seems he's getting more recognition now as a great 'country rock' singer songwriter. Earlier this year demos of the near legendary 'White Light' album were released, just acoustic guitar, harmonica and a voice to break your heart.

Any chance of a supporting product range, like polish and lubricant? Or a guitar!

I know. My Jimmy Saville impersonations don't go down at all well, these days. Makes you wonder how many Jimmy Saville Fancy Dress Costumes Amazon actually sell. The reviews aren't great.

Brilliant! Unfortunately I don't use plecs. Would it be worth waiting for a thumbpick version ? And fingerpicks. There's obviously potential for a whole range here.

Tuning
Nov 19, 2013 12:10:59 GMT

I used to think I'd never be able to actually tune a guitar. I could tell if was out of tune but getting all 6 strings in tune seemed impossible, so I've always used a tuner. My Snark is great but the more I play and fiddle around with tunings, I find I'm using it less to get in tune and more to check and reference my ear which I'm getting to trust a lot more.
I'd be interested to hear how you tune, by ear or tuner? Do you use tempered tunings? Any hints, tips or observations that would be useful?

Right but sometimes I feel like a contortionist, I try to avoid any contact with the top and back of the guitar so I sort of wedge it between my thigh and chest. That supports the guitar and means I don't have to grip the neck but if I don't make point of straightening my back, I find myself hunching over the guitar. I use a big torch instead of a footstool. Not sure what I'd do if I want to play during a power cut, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Got my pickguard blank. Shaped it and stuck it on this morning and it's made a great improvement, to my mind. It's bit big but it has to cover the white patch where to old one was. I like the shape and colour of this one way more.

Since taking acoustic guitar more seriously a few months ago, I've been thinking about how my interest originated and developed. Some tunes always spring to mind that seem to have been ingrained since watching Camberwick Green and Trumpton as a child in the '60s and the internet has allowed me to revisit those. And what a delight! They were written and recorded by Freddie Phillips, mostly on guitar with some simple but inventive percussion and to me are brilliant pieces of characterisation. Not an awful lot happened in the shows, a cat stuck up a tree, requiring the services of the Trumpton Fire Brigade being a major event, but the way the music brought the characters to life made a big impression on me as a youngster. CDs of all the songs in three series are sold by Freddie Phillips' son. I've got the instrumental version and I love it, very listenable and evocative music in it's own right. The Music of TrumptonHere's a nice vid of Bill Tyers playing the Trumpton Fireman theme arranged for 2 guitars And for good measure, the classic episode of Camberwick Green where Windy Miller Gets wasted on cider....

Obviously of more use to the chaps but I've found this to be invaluable for my decision making process.

sounds right up my street. I don't think I could contribute much but it's just the sort of thing I've started to look at with the idea of learning how to arrange for the guitar. I'd be fascinated to see how the project progressed, I'm sure I'd learn a huge amount and it would be a lot of fun!
