Hmmm.... difficult to decide if any of those guitarists I like had particular songs/techniques that added to the genre in any meaningful way. I do know, however, that they added to my development (either by copying - or by not being able to copy!)
Ralph McTell - 8 Frames A Second Paul Brady - Arthur McBride Dave Evans - Whistling Milkman Leo Kottke - Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring Lindsey Buckingham - Never Going Back Again Steve Hunter - Solsbury Hill (Pete Gabriel) Tracy Chapman - Drive
and, because you don't have to be famous to inspire...
Mark Thomson - Leaving Stoer Keith Chesterton - Eleanor Plunkett Phil Taylor - A Place For Solitude

I'm looking forward to see what you do about the tailpiece, francis. Will metalwork skills come to the fore as you craft something bespoke? Or will you be using one that somebody else made earlier?

It is so refreshing when artists rework older songs to suit their voice and age, too many more mature artists still think they are teenagers and it just doesn't work or sound good. I think he's talking about you, Mr McCartney

Thanks, Emmanuel. Most of my 'luthier built' instruments have soundports. Most of my 'factory built' instruments don't. I'm sure there's something to be read into that, but I'm buggered if I know what it is!

Maybe home taping will kill it?

I don't know much of his catalogue, I remember him being a big thing when I was younger - but he played electric so I wasn't overly fussed.
But he seems to have inspired many players...

Just to pick up on one thing ocarolan said: "I do try to keep to the expected chords though - my ears really grate if I hear someone playing what are obviously the wrong chords." I refer you to my post about playing the Steve Tilston song 'Road When I was Young' to...ermmm... Steve Tilston. I played a D major where he played a Dm. He agreed that both worked. I explained my thinking (that it allowed the Dm to be played in the outro as an obvious change) which he told me was 'an interesting concept'. He won't change how he plays it and I'm damned if I will, either

Perfect excuse to post this from a few years back... Happy birthday, SK

If you play something exactly as the original is played - you're a tribute band. If you play something the way it makes you feel - you're an artist. Also, what delb0y said. I have spoken. Case closed, I think we can all agree, yes? does anyone dare defy me?

Apart from one weekend in September I only ever play for my own enjoyment.
I've not been paid to play since I was 22 - 40 years ago.
I'm okay with that.
I am in awe of anyone who has the chutzpah to play in front of strangers. I won't even play in front of a camera.

I am not a rule breaker. I may have no respect for your rules, fatfingerjohn, but I won't break them

This was too restrictive - Jesus had 12 mates round for HIS last supper!
I need to get Tom Lehrer and Mitch Benn in there somehow… 😀
