I vaguely know Kevin (he's a good pal of one of my mates). He's a brilliant mando player. Get him on the forum!! He really is a fantastic play isn't he? A great guy as well! We did another video-interview while Kevin was here. (I defiantly prefer staying behind the camera!!) All the very best, Rory www.taranguitars.co.ukwww.thewoodshop.scot

It will be here after the middle of April, would be great to see you both.

Hi All, My First Mandolin is now finished and off to do some rehearsals with Karen Matheson via Matheu Watson. I had my very good friend, Kevin Macleod up yesterday as he was very keen to try it, we did some videos which I will post as soon as I get them. Sound wise, I'm very pleased with it. Full ringing trebles and strong balanced bass which is what I wanted. I'm offering these at £1399 base price. If you would like more details please do get in touch. Hi All, I hope that this finds you all well. Just a wee post to let you know about www.thewoodshop.scot One of the ideas behind the workshop renovation last year was to enable us (my wife and I) to start putting on gigs as it is something that we have spoken about for years. I'm very pleased to announce the dates of the first 2 gigs; The James Brothers on the 17th of April King Creosote on the 1st of May If you would like to come to one or both of these intimate performances in the Taran Guitars workshop please get in touch with me via www.thewoodshop.scot or at rorydowling@taranguitars.co.uk or call the workshop on 01333 720282. Hi All, A wee update on the tour build. The guitar is coming on nicely, I should have the back on next week but I've got some pictures as promised. Bag pressing the double sides together after they come out of the 'time machine'. The cut away getting the same treatment. Once the sides and cut away where done they got mitred together. I don't bind to these parts as I like the grain to follow round the cut away. Neck block in. Complicated wee bit of wood, many angles!! One to the back. Brown Tape is my only workshop companion, oh the dog as well! Braces on in the go deck. The back stays here for 2-3days. A bit of R&R for it. A lovely piece of German Spruce. On to the linings. Because of the double sides I use a single piece of reclaimed Brazilian Mahogany instead of my usual laminated sycamore linings. Reclaimed, its still got the paint on the edges. This came out of a Clydesdale Bank, probably the only thing I'll ever get back from a bank! A wee finish sand and to the iron. Once the linings are in place the back face is scribed to the arch of the back and then sanded to fit. Here you can see the mitres of the cut away. The back all tuned up and ready for fitting. Now the sides and back are ready for fitting I have to make sure that the cut away is at the correct angle to marry up with the edge of the tapper of the fret board. The piece of wood that links the neck to the tail stops any movement when I glue the back on. The sides are very stiff which is the purpose of the double sides but even a slip when gluing of .3 of a mm can throw everything out. Measure once cut twice and all that! So that's us for now. I shall follow up with more photos as they come. I hope that everyone has a great weekend. All the very best, Rory www.taranguitars.co.uk

Hi All, I hope that this finds you all well. Just a wee update on the mandolin that I've been making. I'm just going to call it a Taran Mandolin, I have plans to make an A5 style mandolin at some point as well. This one is an arch top - flat back mandolin which similar to my Bouzoukis in construction with the Portuguese Guitar/Sobell neck joint. This is just a prototype to hear how it goes and then I'll make the required changes for another. Exciting stuff!! The materials are: Indian Rosewood Back and Side Italian Spruce Soundboard Reclaimed Brazilian Mahogany neck and will have a Gibson style neck graft in Indian Rosewood on the back of the head stock. All the very best for now, Rory www.taranguitars.co.ukwww.facebook.com/taran.guitarsOne of the Bouzoukis I make. Here's the Portuguese Guitar Style neck, the actual neck runs through under the sound board and the sides hold the heel and neck in place. This is in Cocobolo and German Spruce.

Thanks everyone! Leo - Just brilliant! Jackorion - Great News! Alig - Go on then Martin - You can give me some feed back on the first one Ocarolan - Like your thinking A wee Mandolin update; I'm making two models, an A5 and a celtic. I'm interested in to see what both bring to the table. The Celtic will be Indian rosewood and european spruce and the A5 will be a Maple and european standard. I'll maybe do a we post on another page when things get going? All the very best for now. Rory Taran Guitars www.taranguitars.co.uk

Hi All, I hope that this finds you well. So almost a year ago (22 August) I asked if any one would be up for another road trip. Many of you where, many thanks. I haven't forgotten and now that the new workshop is finished and I'm back on some kind of even keel I would like to take you all up on your kind offer to road test one of my guitars. I have been thinking a lot about the guitar and as we discussed I think a Taran Mhor would be good. The Spec: Cocobolo 4 piece back Cocobolo double sides with Scottish Sycamore German Spruce top Cut Away Laskin Bevel Mosaic and glass rosette Nut 45mm Saddle 60mm Flat head stock but perhaps slotted I've started already and will keep you all updated with the build. I'm very busy on commission work and new Mandolins so it will be an on going build. I'm looking forward to it. All the very best for now, Rory Taran Guitars www.taranguitars.co.uk
