Thanks Guys!
Yes J, I sent a development model down to a player at Christmas time. It had Rocklite on the board and didn't tell him deliberately to see if he noticed. We spoke last week and I asked about it, 'its beautiful' was all he said. When I hold him what it was he couldn't believe it!
The big difference between Richlite and Rocklite is that Richlite is Phenolic resin and paper where as the Rocklite is wood so has grain direction and most importantly for me sounds like wood i.e. it rings when you tap it.
Many thanks again!
Best aye,
Rory

Thank you both of you! Your on you 100th too Dave! Brilliant news and looks great to! Its a milestone alright!
Cheers Martin! The rocklike has been something I been using more and more. I actually did a video for the company this morning about using it. I've been helping to develop it with them, doing tests with it for 3 and half years now. When I first was told of the idea I was super interested as its a total new product developed for the musical instrument market. The very first batch they did was, well... there was room for improvement shall we say. Now Rocklite is really amazing, they've put so much time and effort in to it. A really game changer for Ebony consumption world wide I'd say and with Ebony looking to join Rosewoods in 3 years time its time we start as luthiers using more of this kind of thing. Limi are suppling it to the U.S. now and I hear good things... So for me in my 100th I suppose its about using materials looking forward to the future as well celebrating materials that one day I may not be able to use. In an overly poetic nutshell! Hope that helps mate.
All the very best to you both,
Rory

Thanks Guys! A bit different for me aesthetically but I had the chance to try a few new things and materials on this one. Got to work out final details of the 100th Guitar as yet. Looks like next year now.
Anyway, many thanks.

Hi All, Its been busy times here with lots of exciting builds going out. One of them is this, my 100th instrument! I Can't really believe it, it seems to have come round so quickly! Heres a wee description of the Taran. 'This is the classic 'Taran'. A smaller than Om guitar, perfect for evenings by the fire although equally at home on stage or in the recording studio with excellent balance across a hugely dynamic range. The Master Grade Cocobolo delivers power and clarity with the depth of tone you would expect to find from any exceptional Rosewood. The Neck is Old reclaimed Brazilian Mahogany and has carbon fibre reinforcement rods as well as a 2 way truss-rod making this Slim C profile neck sing all the way up to the ‘dusty end’ with no wolf notes or no lose of power in the high notes. The polished Rocklite fret board is an incredibly stable and sustainable Ebony like material that is so easy to maintain, with a 44.5mm nut width giving a great balance between comfort and room. The Mitred cutaway gives easy access to those high frets and is visually striking with the grain of the Cocobolo continuing around the cutaway unbroken by bindings. This guitars side unit is double sided. Made up of Cocobolo and Scottish Sycamore, the increased stiffness in the sides allows for a thinner and more responsive soundboard getting the most out of the Master Grade Swiss Alpine Spruce top and its bracing of Sitka Spruce. The Taran has its own unique bracing pattern using a mixture of hand carved parabolic and scolloped bracing to balance the guitars powerful full bass with thick singing trebles and everything in between. The rosette of Mosaic Cocobolo is partly ringed with Olive wood from the Greek Island of Crete which I hand select a number of years ago. This beautifully figured Olive wood is also used for the players bevel making for a wonderfully comfortable playing experience. The bridge is solid Ebony from Cameroon and is hand carved to maximise strength and reduce weight. A string spacing for light to medium strings of 59mm break over the careful intonated bone saddle with an increased break angle, heightening even further the response and clarity of this guitar. With matching Cocobolo veneers for the headstock face and back, the scarfed head of this guitar is virtually indestructible and has Gotoh 510z’s in chrome for the most accurate and stable tuning around. The timeless t. logo is hand cut from solid stirling silver and then hand inlayed into the Cocobolo. Stirling silver also features in the fret markers with circular 12th fret markers inlayed with Cocobolo centres and with polished sterling silver dots for all the other major frets. Fret Wire is the highest quality Jesscar wire, hard wearing nickel silver. The whole guitar is finished in Melamine Lacquer polished to a high gloss. This incredibly durable finish applied in extremely thin coats give a protective finish that doesn’t hinder the guitars wonderfully responsive soundboard. An option to have strap buttons fitted is available and also a number of Pick-ups are available to fit. This guitar come with a Hiscox proII case and delivery to the UK only.' Hi All, I hope that this finds you well. I finished a guitar recently for a client that I like to share with you if I may. This is my Dreadnought model in Indian Rosewood and Swiss Bearclaw Spruce. Its a little different to my standard Dread. The Client had his heart set on a 12th fret joint and a Hand Rubbed Sunburst finished. The Sunburst was good fun, nerve raking as ever but I'm pleased with this one. You get a really interesting, almost 'Damascus' effect in the Swiss spruce and the Bearclaw really stands out. Here's a few picture of the build and the hand rubbed burst. One of the hard bits is to stop the Sycamore Purfling absorbing the stain, after being treated with shellac its all masked up. Its a scary process this bit, specially when it looks like yellow snow to start with. But the base colour is the really important, best starting light and getting darker... Then really Dark!! Then the blend or burst. Here's a wee video of the guitar in action. Jamie McClennan was over trying a few guitars I had in and kindly played this tune "The Shearing's Coming Round" which is one of the tunes for the James Brothers album which he and James Fagan have been touring this year. We where lucky enough to have them play in March that the First Wood Shop gig here in the workshop. Good Times! www.thejamesbrothers.co.ukFinally the Ulladale all strung up. For those who are interested, I'm now using the Name Ulladale for my Dreadnought as I have discontinued the old Ulldale from my range. Many thanks for looking, special thanks to Rob for ordering this guitar and to Jamie for his amazing playing! All the very best, Rory www.taranguitars.co.ukwww.thewoodshop.scot

Hi Martin, Yep there the same as the bluegrass style mandolins, the tops are carved from a book matched wedge. Arch top but flat back which differs from the A's and F's. Below is a picture of the bouzoukis that are the same as the Mandolins. (The Mandolin pictures are covered in measurements;)) But this will give you an idea of what it looks like in side. Hope this helps. All the very best, Rory www.taranguitars.co.ukwww.thewoodshop.scot

Friday night saw the first Wood Shop gig with the Might James Brother kicking off the venues opening. We had 54 folk in which was wonderful, the music was incredible and everyone left with a smile. What more could we ask for! And to top it all off there where tunes around the kitchen table into the wee small hours with James and Jamie. The next gig is on the 1st of may with King Creosote and friends! www.thejamesbrothers.co.ukwww.thewoodshop.scotwww.taranguitars.co.uk

Hi all, I spent some time today organising some wood for Springwell orders. This Scottish Rippled Sycamore which was cut in 2000. The logs came from Haddington in East Lothian. I've been saving this particular log for Mandolins and now the sets are cut ready for work to start later this year. Exciting times!
